Post-Civil War, This Day Spread Today, you can find Juneteenth celebrations all over the United States, including right here in the DMV area. However, originally the festival is from Texas. It commemorates June 19, 1865, when the Union military began laws surrounding the process. Today, we’d call the subsequent growth of this holiday a grassroots movement, a kind of activism that we’re intimately familiar with. Juneteenth

Today, as we acknowledge and account for the reality faced by many of their descendants, Juneteenth seems more appropriate than ever. In the end, though, Juneteenth is ultimately a day of celebration and hope. Slowed but never stalled, it eventually gained national attention in Texas in the 1970s, and it’s been state after state of celebration and prayer breakfasts ever since. It seems like Juneteenth will continue to grow, which means you might want to circle June 19 on future calendars. Local celebrations abound, and a potential federal holiday in the vein of Indigenous Peoples’ Day might well be in the cards in the next decade.
