FIRST CONGRESSIONAL PRATER T HAT CHER ’ S Military Journal, dated December, 1777, contained the first prayer ever uttered in our Con gress. The prayer by Reverend Jacob Duchs was as follows: “ O Lord, our Heavenly Father, high and mighty King of kings, and Lord of lords, who dost from Thy throne behold all the dwellers of the earth, and reign- est with power supreme and uncontrolled, over all the kingdoms, empires and gov ernments, look down, in mercy, we be seech Thee, on these American states, who have fled from the rod of the op pressor, and thrown themselves on Thy glorious protection, desiring henceforth to be only dependent upon Thee. To Thee they have appealed for the righteousness of their cause: to Thee do they now look up for that countenance and support which Thou alone canst give. Take them, therefore, Heavenly Father, under Thy nurturing care.

on the pages of the New Testament. The Apostle Paul strongly affirmed that the gospel which he taught was not by man but was by revelation of Jesus Christ. He goes on to say through the inspira tion of the Holy Spirit that for believers the faith and the life which came through his spoken word as recorded in the epis tles from his pen was to be received. Nor is the question of acceptance or rejection left to one’s approval. It is absolutely mandatory, and if one is to turn from such acceptance the curse of God’s anathema is to rest upon him. Lest there should still be harboring in one’s mind a shadow of doubt as to the veracity of the Spirit’s, truth by Paul, practically the same words spoken in verse eight are repeated in verse nine. Here are words for preachers of the gospel to ponder. Here are words which ought to be very clearly taught in the ears of all of God’s children. It Is Important To Train Them Frequently there come to the editor’s desk statistics from various evangelistic campaigns held throughout the land, tell ing of the total number of souls who received Christ in a particular meeting. In these statistics there is real cause for rejoicing, not only upon earth but in the halls of Heaven. One of God’s choic est gifts to any of His servants is the gift of evangelism. And one of God’s greatest gifts to the church is a gifted evangelist, Ephesians 4:11. But after a person has come to know the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour, there is still a great deal to be done. The Scriptures set forth that when one is saved he is a babe in Christ and must needs grow by feeding and exercising. There are many things a new convert must of necessity learn, for he faces not only the continued presence of his old nature but a new foe in the person of our soul’s deceiver, Satan. He must needs learn to put on the whole armour of God, Ephesians 6, but he should be taught the use of the sword of the Spirit. He should become acquainted with the person and work of the blessed Holy Spirit who in dwells his newly-cleansed heart—First Corinthians 6:19,20. He should be start ed on a path of growth in grace and a knowledge of Christ, Second Peter 3:18. In some cases, and perhaps far too many, the new convert is congratulated, rejoiced over and left there to struggle -as Best he can with all the mystery of the new life in .Christ, whereas' what is vitally necessary is that he should be given every comfort and encouragement to press on in the things of God. Par ticularly following evangelistic meetings, great emphasis should be made on con verts’ classes and visits to the homes of the newly-saved, and an abundant amount of love and Christian thoughtfulness should be showered upon these converts in order that they should not become discouraged and fall by the wayside. “ Give them wisdom in council and valor in the field. Defeat the malicious designs of our adversaries; convince them of the unrighteousness of their cause; and if they will persist in sanguinary purposes, oh, let the voice of Thine un erring justice, sounding in their hearts, constrain them to drop the weapons of war from their unnerved hands in the day of battle. Be Thou present, 0 God of wisdom, and direct the councils of this honorable assembly. Enable them to set tle things on the best and surest founda tion, that the scenes of blood may be speedily closed, and order, harmony and peace be effectually restored, and truth and justice, religion and piety prevail and flourish amongst Thy people. Pre serve the health of their bodies and the vigor of their minds; shower down upon them and the millions they here repre sent such temporal blessings as Thou seest expedient for them in this present world, and crown them with everlasting glory in the world to come. All this we ask, in the name and through the merit of Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Saviour. Amen.”
