I N the parable of the unjust steward in Luke 16, the Lord Jesus seems to have set a dangerous precedent. Some even think that He is commending crookedness, or that at any rate He sets His seal of approval on cleverness which is shady or at least questionable. It is not our intention to go into this parable at this time, but we want to draw out the ' primary purpose in it. This unjust steward resorted to ques tionable methods in order to make his cash count for him in the future. His master commended his diligence in this respect. According to the rules of big business, what he did may pass muster, but his trickery cannot stand the white light of Christian ethics. The key to understanding the Lord’s meaning is in His expression in verse 8, “for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than thè children of light.” In the world a man will resort to any expediency in order to make his money count for the future. The children of this world have “ smart money.” They invest it only in gilt-edge stocks and bonds. They put it where it will yield dividends. The children of light, on the other hand, do not seem to have any “ smart money.” They do not use the “mammon of unrighteousness” in making an invest ment which will pay off in eternity. A Christian ought to invest his money with the same care and cleverness that the child of this world uses when he makes an investment. Do you know anything about the use that is made of your missionary dollar? You ought to. Do you know whether your dollars will get into the hands of liberals or not? Do you know the mis sionaries personally, or do you know anything about their work? Again, you ought to. Why don’t you invest in some missionary this year? Get acquainted with him or her either personally or by letter. Find out what these workers are doing. Place your gifts where they will do the most good for God. Did you know that the investment you make in time now will be deposited for you in heaven? Did you know that the gold of this world can be used to “ buy” a crown in eternity? Read Luke 16:1-13. Christian, these are dangerous days and it is four minutes to midnight. Make your giving count for God. Do you have any “ smart money” ?
