Objects: An electric fan, an electric light cord about 6 feet long, a large blue cardboard triangle, a globe of the world? two bolts 4 inches long, two sticks 1 inch square by 7 inches long, a glass dish such as is used to defrost a refrig erator, and a capital “ I.” (Cut one of the wires in the light cord. Fasten a new wire about 3 feet long to the current end, and another the same length to the light end of the cut wire. Tape the joints. Fasten the ends of each of these wires to separate bolts with solder, or between nuts. Before fastening the wires to the bolts, bore a hole in the end of each stick and slip one over each bolt. The sticks will serve as nonconducting handles. Mark the triangle “ GOD” and place at one end of the glass dish. Put the globe at the other end of the dish. Fill the dish half full of water. Place the bolts in the water: One hidden behind the triangle, and the other 2 inches from the globe. Connect the electric fan to the outlet. Gradually sprinkle a small amount of salt in the water and stir thoroughly until the fan begins to turn slowly. Move the bolt to the end of the dish, and the fan will stop. Fasten the “ I” to the bolt near the globe. Make the solution sev eral hours before the lesson, as it will advance. A test should be made just be fore the lesson.) Lesson: The electricity is turned on, but the fan refuses to run. Let’s see if we can find what is wrong. Look at this “ I.” It is far away from God and too close to the world. It is like the chil dren of Israel in the days of the prophet Amos. He said, “ For I know your mani fold transgressions and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right” (Amos 5:12). Not only did Amos tell of their sins, but he told them what to do. Verse 14 says, “ Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the Lord, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.” We will move this “ I” representing Israel, closer to the triangle marked “ GOD” and see what happens. The fan begins turning and the closer it gets to the triangle, the faster it turns. This shows why Amos was calling the people back to God. The closer they got to God, the more spiritual life they revealed. People today, who are far from God should turn to Him, forsake their sins, and by faith receive Christ as their per sonal Saviour.

Object: A large paper heart. (Down the center of the heart print the word “ FORGIVEN.”- Using the letters of this word, complete the words, “ FAITH LESS, F O R S A K E N , TRANSGRES SORS, UNGODLY, BRIBES, EVIL, SINNERS and CONDEMNED.” Make a crease on both sides of the word “ FOR GIVEN” in order that the paper will tear there when desired.) Lesson: This sad-looking heart is a picture of the people of Israel in the day of the prophet Amos. We read, “ FALLEN, F O R S A K E N , TRANS GRESSORS , UNGODLY, BR IBES , EVIL, SINNERS, and CONDEMNED.” This is a very sad picture. They had gone so far that the Lord said to them, “ I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies. Though ye offer me burnt-offerings and your meat-offerings. I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace-offerings of your fat beasts” (Amos 5:21, 22). Because of this condition, Amos over and over again pled with Israel to repent. David had said, “A broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise” (Psalm 51:17). Only a few years before Joel had said, “ Rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness” (Joel 2:13). We will tear or rend this heart as Joel suggests, representing true repent ance. (Tear down each side of the word “ FORGIVEN,” leaving the word on an arrow pointing down.) Look , when sin ners rend their hearts in repentance, God forgives because of the sacrifice of Christ. An arrow with the word “ FOR GIVEN” written on it points to the floor where the broken heart lies. In looking forward to this time of for giveness for Israel, Amos said, “ In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof: and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old” (Amos 9:11). It is wonderful to know of God’s will ingness to forgive Israel in Amos’ day, and it is also wonderful to know that He will forgive and save all who come to Him today. ’ T H E K I N G ' S B U S I N E S S
