Space is limited and courses are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. There may be tickets available for purchase on-site. Check for availability at the SWVS registration area.
CE TOURS FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 8:00 AM - 12:30 PM SAN ANTONIO ZOO HOSPITAL TOUR Zoo Veterinary Staff
Basic Life Support (BLS). The course consists of an interactive online course that must be completed before the onsite portion to be held at SWVS. Veterinary medical professionals should certify themselves in veterinary CPR! Registration for the online portion of the certifying course is included in the registration fee along with the onsite portion to be held at SWVS. Once registration for this lab is complete, you will be notified with login information for the online portion of the course. The interactive online course must be completed before the onsite portion for the individual to become certified in Basic Life Support.
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 1:30 PM - 5:30 PM | ROOM 217 D NEUROLOGIC EXAMINATION OF SMALL ANIMALS Andy Shores, DVM, MS, PhD, DACVIM (Neuro) Participants will participate in neurologic examinations in live canine patients. Principals covered in the lab include approaching the examination in an organized, structured fashion,using an exam form; examination of the cranial nerves, evaluation of posture and gait, segmental reflex responses, and postural reactions. In addition, principles of localization and differential diagnoses will be discussed. This lab is for DVMs only and costs $350.

Following the lectures, attendees will walk to the Veterinary Hospital for the tour. The walk will take the group underneath the hippo pool and past the aviary, hunting dog, and elephant exhibits. At the Veterinary Hospital, attendees will divide into four groups for a guided tour of the facility. The tour will include the treatment room, surgery room, lab, and hospital quarantine/diet prep area. Staff will be available to answer questions. Transportation will be provided. The shuttle will depart from the Convention Center at the main entrance at 8:00am and return around 12:30pm.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM | ROOM 217 D REGIONAL DENTAL ANESTHESIA: NERVE BLOCKS Victoria Lukasik, DVM, DACVAA The local anesthetic nerve blocks used for regional anesthesia during dog and cat dentistry will be discussed. Participants will have the opportunity to practice finding landmarks and doing the blocks during the hands on lab portion. Skull models will be available to aid in finding anatomic landmarks in both dogs and cats. Blocks will be practiced on cadavers. At the end of the lab, participants should have increased confidence in their ability to correctly perform dental nerve blocks and provide excellent regional anesthesia for dog and cat dental patients. This lab will be broken up into a 1-hr lecture and then 1-hr interactive lab portion for attendees.
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 1:30 PM - 5:30 PM | ROOM 217 A SOFT TISSUE BANDAGING Marina Harrison, BS, CVA II Paula Plummer, LVT, VTS (ECC, SAIM) This interactive lab will review wound type, wound class, stages of wound healing, wound care products, and bandaging techniques for soft tissue wounds.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM | ROOM 217 D DENTAL EXTRACTIONS MADE EASIER Brook Niemiec, DVM, DAVDC Erin Ribka, DVM Allen Skinner, DVM, DAVDC Take the frustration out of extractions. Utilizing a minimally invasive 9-step approach, we will guide you through closed extractions. Following this, sectioning of multi-rooted teeth will be presented. Following sectioning, multirooted teeth are treated as single-root extractions. Finally, some extractions (especially canine and carnassial teeth as well as teeth with ankylosis) are better performed after the creation of gingival flaps and removal of bone to ease the extraction process. This lecture will be presented with the aid of high- quality videos.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM | ROOM 217 D ABDOMINAL ULTRASOUND Brian Poteet, MS, DVM, DACVR, DABSNM This is an introductory course for veterinary abdominal ultrasound. Each participant will have an opportunity to get hands-on scanning practice with live animals. After the lab, you should be able to recognize and locate the normal abdominal organs. The instructors will be available for you to during the lab with direction and any questions you may have.
