They are at the core of our wellness. This paper and presentation discusses new (and sometimes old but forgotten or ignored) information and science related to diet, diabetes, coronary artery disease, myocardial infarctions, testing modalities, and other pertinent topics. Only by protecting our own health can we protect our families and your patients. Take action now. Have we been duped by those who for decades have force fed us the “Food Pyramid” and anti-fat agenda? Are you a TOFI? What the heck is a CAC and why do you need one? Do Keto and Atkins lifestyles have merit or are they mere fads foisted upon us by reality TV and Hollywood? Why do some people LOL at their LDL and get away with it? All of this and much more will be revealed in this dynamic and perhaps occasionally irreverent session. This program is bound to make its participants rethink what is important and how all of us can better control our fate. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM (ECS): OUR BODIES UNIVERSAL THERMOSTAT Trina Hazzah, DVM, DACVIM (Oncology), CVCH 8:00 AM - 8:50 AM | Room 007 A The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex system composed of chemical compounds (endocannanbinoids), receptors, and enzymes that are present throughout the nervous system as well as in organs and tissues throughout the body. While the true purpose of the ECS is to maintain homeostasis, it has several intricate mechanisms. The ECS functions to control multiple neurotransmitters in the body, plays a role in reducing inflammation, pain, reproductive health, gut health, etc. This lecture will discuss both the structure and function of the ECS to help the audience understand the importance of this system and provide the foundation for an understanding of why compounds found in cannabis have profound effects on the body. We will also discuss what Endocannabinoid Deficiency is and how it has been shown to be associated with a variety of chronic diseases. A TOUR OF THE CANNABIS PLANT: WHAT’S INSIDE? Trina Hazzah, DVM, DACVIM (Oncology), CVCH 9:00 AM - 9:50 AM | Room 007 A There are over 700 compounds found within the cannabis plant including over 150 phytocannabinoids, 200 terpenoids and ~29 flavonoids. All three category of major compounds within the plant are known to have physiologic and therapeutic effects. This lecture will review the most common phytocannabinoids, terpenoids and flavonoids in detail. In addition, it will help attendees understand the effects of the whole plant on the body as well as how specific combinations of cannabinoids and terpenoids can potentially be used synergistically to treat various diseases. IMPLEMENTING CANNABIS: A CLINICAL ALGORITHM Trina Hazzah, DVM, DACVIM (Oncology), CVCH 10:30 AM - 11:20 AM | Room 007 A This lecture will review the steps to consider when evaluating a patient for cannabis implementations. Audience members will learn about specific medical indications for cannabis medicine, contraindications, drug interactions, product selection, dosing rational, toxicity and more. PERSPECTIVES FROM A VETERINARY ONCOLOGIST ON THE USE OF CANNABIS IN THE CANCER PATIENT Trina Hazzah, DVM, DACVIM (Oncology), CVCH 11:30 AM - 12:20 PM | Room 007 A The lecture will cover the relationship between cancer and the ECS as well as the antineoplastic mechanisms of phytocannabinoids, terpenoids and flavonoids. In addition, a discussion on some of the pertinent cancer specific preclinical and clinical research performed and case reports will be reviewed.
