W ow! It’s even more beautiful than in the photos! That was my in- itial thought upon first encountering Sardin- ia. When you hear only wonderful impres- sions about certain places, it’s to be ex- pected that you’ll pack high expectations in your large suitcase. Mine weighed about 17 kilos, and I was still astounded and sur- prised! Sardinia exceeds expectations and is far more beautiful to the human eye than it is through the best camera lens. It’s true that the same could be said of a large part of Italy, but this island is special be- cause it unifies everything that best repre- sents one of the world’s most visited coun- tries in the most beautiful way. First and foremost, Sardinia is like a large open-air museum, with a multitude of ar- chaeological sites and about 7,000 un- earthed nuraghes – the name given to Sar- dinia’s mysterious Bronze Age megalithic edifices that captivate the imagination of lovers of history and archaeology with their secrets. Traces have been left on this island by many ancient civilisations, from the Phoenicians to the Romans. No won- der, then, that the people of Sardinia are very proud of their history and heritage. Nature has been generous with this island. Alluring coasts, dense forests and challeng- ing cliffs are a real paradise for adventur- ers, while it is also home to the most beau- tiful beaches in Italy, and anywhere in the world. Combining all this with picturesque towns and luxury resorts gives you a re- ally attractive package, such that it can be rightly said that everyone can have a Sar- dinian holiday tailored to their own tastes. Alghero – the Italian Catalonia The fact that Air Serbia flies directly to Alghero provides an opportunity to ex- plore this interesting and picturesque city in the island’s northwestern Sassari region. Italian and Catalan culture inter- twine in an interesting way in this city, with the Catalan people having settled the area during the Middle Ages, lead- ing to it today being dubbed Little Barce- lona. This city of just over 40,000 inhab- itants is packed with cafés, restaurants, shops, winding alleyways and hidden squares, and as you approach its walls, which have surrounded the city since the 16 th century, views of endless blueness emerge.
HERE AND NOW Sardinia: discreet Mediterranean charm It isn’t just an island filled with wonderful landscapes and beaches, but is also home to amiable and warm people who are extremely hospitable and open to conversation
