Two cities, two stories: Palermo and Catania

Sicily is more than an island — it is a mosaic of different cultu- res and history. Air Serbia pa- ssengers most often land in Palermo or Catania, two metro- polises that offer completely di- fferent experiences. Palermo is a city of markets, cafés and historic buildings, where Arabic, Norman and Spanish influen- ces are intertwined at every step. Catania, in the island’s so- utheast, rises in the shadow of the magnificent Mount Etna and offers an excellent combi- nation of the urban and the na- tural. Natural beauty spots and archaeological gems You are awaited in Sicily by in- credible landscapes — from the beaches of the east coast to the volcanic traces of Mo- unt Etna. Don’t miss out on vi- siting the temples of Selinunte or the ancient city of Agrigento, where the ruins exude history.

Along the way, you can also enjoy swimming at beaches li- ke Mondello near Palermo or Giardini Naxos near Catania. Si- cily boasts a plethora of stu- nningly beautiful beaches, ran- ging from long stretches of golden sand to dramatic roc- ky coastlines. Popular choices include San Vito Lo Capo, wi- th its white sand beach that’s reminiscent of the Caribbean or Scala dei Turchi beach, wi- th its unique white cliffs. This island also offers beautiful be- aches in protected areas, such as Lo Zingaro Nature Reserve and Vendicari Nature Reserve, but also on the nearby Aeolian Islands. World gastronomy This beautiful island isn’t only known for its lush nature and ri- ch history, but also for its irresi- stible delicacies. Each morsel is a journey through the centu- ries, a reimagining of traditional recipes and local ingredients, but most of these sweets ha- ve long since “departed” the- ir homeland and conquered the whole world. If you find yourse - lf on this island, be sure to try at least some of these delicio- us snacks, or all of them, Why not? One of the most famous Sicilian desserts is cannoli - a crispy, crumbly pastry tube fi - lled with creamy ricotta chee- se and sweet citrus or choco- late cream. These small but mighty bites symbolise the ri- chness and diversity of Sicilian cuisine, combining sweetness with a perfect balance of textu- res and flavours. Sicilian cuisi- ne is generally a story in itself — from arancini (fried rice balls) to the inevitable granita, a refre-

shing dessert made of ice and fruity flavours that’s perfect for sweltering days. The palette is completed by the addition of fi - sh specialities, olive oil and ri- cotta cheese. Fiestas and festivals August is a vibrant time in Si- cily, with many festivals, reli- gious celebrations and cultu- ral events. Key events include the Festino di San Vito held in Mazara del Vallo (17 th -24 th Au- gust) as a procession honou- ring the city’s patron saint, and the national holiday of Ferra- gosto (15 th August). There are also numerous concerts, food festivals and opportunities to explore Sicily’s historical and natural beauty.
