Ostrvo Kolosa, vitezova i leptira

Ostrvo je dobilo nadimak „Smaragdno“ zbog svojih ži - vopisnih zelenih brda i dolina, jer borovi i čempresi pokrivaju oko 37 odsto površine.

The story of Rhodes According to Greek mythology, Helios, the sun god, fell in love with a beautiful nymph called Rhodes. When Helios’s light to- uched her skin, she turned into an island. Rhodes also means “rose”, which is fitting given how many flowers there are. Seven wonders The Colossus of Rhodes was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It repre- sented a statue of Helios that was erected by sculptor Cha- res of Lindos in 280 BC, in ho- nour of a successful defence of Rhodes. According to con- temporary descriptions, it re- ached a height of 33 metres, making it approximately the same height as New York’s Statue of Liberty. Valley of Butterflies Petaloudes is home to milli- ons of butterflies, this valley is filled with waterfalls and la - kes and is at its most lively during August, when butter- flies breed here. It is illegal to catch or kill them – not that you would think of doing so.

Island of the Colossus, knights and butterflies

Rhodes is Greece’s fourth lar- gest island and the largest of the Dodecanese islands. It is actually closer to the Turki- sh mainland (18 km) than it is to Athens (400 km). It offers a fascinating fusion of cultu- re, history, outdoor adventures and 42 idyllic beaches. It was nicknamed the Emerald Island because of its picturesque green hills and valleys, with pi- nes and cypress trees covering about 37 per cent of territory.
