AND JUST LIKE THAT... SARAH JESSICA PARKER Playing Carrie is still lots of fun Fashion, as always, plays a very important role in the show, and for this season I adored all those turn- of-the-century pieces – in addition to a lot of Vivienne Westwood, which is always super cool

I f you’re a fan of Sarah Jessi- ca Parker, you’re undoubted- ly already avidly watching the third season of the show And Just Like that... Sex and the City had a huge impact on socie- ty at a time when we needed to dis- cuss everything openly, while the se- quel show, which didn’t arrive with high expectations, has nonetheless managed to endure. Even without Sa- mantha! Kim Cattrall has stuck to her word and won’t be appearing in the third season either, to the univer- sal regret of millions of adoring fans. But there’s still Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda, plus the new girls who joined them previously, and the se- ries continues to address relevant is- sues more or less successfully. Sarah Jessica Parker remains the star of the show and, as she tells us, she also re- mains happy and satisfied with what she’s done, both as the lead actress and as an executive producer... How did it feel to be back for a third season? “Well, I think I speak for all of us, and I typically don't do that, but I think we were all really excited. It was a big, hefty, muscular, rich season. We worked really hard and long, and the stories are really big, and it felt really full and juicy.”

As an executive producer as well, how does it feel at this point when your work is being viewed and judged? “I would say that part is not particular- ly appealing. Opinions – it just turns out more and more people have them! But that's the nature of the world in which we live, and you can just simply do the best work. I think we all did. How closely did you work with Michael Patrick King on the storylines? “Michael Patrick King and I talk a lot about each season. He always meets with all the actors in advance of shoot- ing, and he maps out what his hopes are, his intentions, what he thinks is go- ing to be interesting and exciting and surprising for the audience and for the characters themselves. But once you're on the set, and you have an actor play- ing the role versus the theoretical ideas in the script, that always shakes things up in a really exciting way. And you think you might be having somebody guest star for two episodes, and then you come to the conclusion very quick- ly that this person's really, really great and you should keep them for a while. I was really happy about the story that Michael wanted to tell. And I particu- larly liked this idea of the novel – Carrie is writing fiction for the first time. It’s a turn of the century story, but it starts to run parallel to her own life. So, it was really fun. Hard work, always, but fun.”

Carrie's costumes throughout the show start to have elements of her fictional story…? “Yes, we were purposeful about that too. I was doing a play in London when we first started the fittings. So, our cos- tume designers came to London. They had all of these Victorian and turn- of-the-century pieces, and we were all swooning over them, and Michael was starting this idea about the book I’m writing, and it was this crazy confluence of things. ‘Is this the day we're going to do this skirt that screams 1912?’.” Do you have any particular favourites in terms of Carrie's wardrobe from this season? “Oh my gosh. I loved all those turn-of- the-century pieces. There are also Vivi- enne Westwood dress, sweater and shoes, some of which were new to me, and some of which were vintage pieces from the past. Those are great to wear. A lot of Vivienne Westwood; current and vintage, which is super cool.”

What are you working on next? You’re judging the Booker Prize?

“Yeah, that's what I'm mostly focused on. I’m reading every spare moment, so that's pretty time consuming. And I’m reading scripts for other things, and doing other work, and the kids, of course, most importantly. There’s nev- er enough time but, yeah, much to look forward to.”
