T he exhibition David Hockney: From Paper to Screen, repre- senting one of the most influ- ential artists of the 20 th and 21 st centuries, has opened at the Museum of Contempo- rary Art in Belgrade. As a tireless innovator, Hockney has constantly pushed the bound- aries of fine art, sketching, photography and digital media, while his oeuvre fuses classical artistic traditions with bold experiments in perspective, colour and technology. It was back in 1970 that a then young Hockney had a solo exhibition at the Muse- um of Contemporary Art in Belgrade, which served as an early indicator of the global reach that he would have and as a moment of enduring importance in MoCAB’s history. Today, more than five decades on, Hockney
has returned – this time through the pow- erful legacy of his artistic work and a rad- ical evolution of visual language. The idea of presenting Hockney’s works to the Bel- grade audience once again was born of a de- sire to highlight an artist who marked the first years of MoCAB’s work and whose ex- hibition resonated far beyond the confines of its time, leaving an enduring mark on the local art scene. But the exhibition also serves as an adequate way of marking this museum’s 60 th anniversary. The exhibition David Hockney: From Paper to Screen runs until 12 th August and provides unique insight into Hockney’s work over the decades, from his early drawings and etchings dating back to the 1960s, to his latest works created using an iPad.
