„The Rainbow Bar & Grill“ Nalazi se u srcu Stripa i decenijama predstavlja roken- rol instituciju.
„The Whisky a Go Go“ Ovde su svoj legendarni muzički život započeli „Dorsi“, i to kao domaći bend u „The Whisky a Go Go“ koji su omogućili nastu- pe svakom ko je tamo svirao od 23. maja do 21. avgusta 1966. Članovi benda bili su iznenađe- ni kada je počeo da recituje: „The killer awoke before dawn / He put his boots on / He took a face from the ancient gallery / And he walked on down the hall...“ Morison je kasnije objasnio šta se desilo: „Jedne nedeljne večeri u ’Whisky a Go Go’ nešto mi je kli- knulo. THE WHISKY A GO GO It was here that the Doors launched their legendary career as the Whisky a Go Go’s house band, opening shows for every perform- er that played there from 23rd May to 21st August 1966. They typically performed twice an evening and used the audience’s af- fection for bold experiments. That’s how the famous lyrics of the song The End were created one evening at the Whisky. Morri- son had missed the first set, but the band members dragged him to the second, and at one point Jim requested they perform The End, despite their set not being close to its conclusion. The band’s other members were surprised when he started reciting: The kill- er awoke before dawn, He put his boots on, He took a face from the ancient gallery and he walked on down the hall... Morrison lat- er explained what happened: “One Sunday night at the Whis- ky a Go Go, something clicked. I realised what the whole song was about, what it had been leading up to. It was powerful. It just happened.” As band member Ray Manzarek once explained: “The Whisky a Go Go was being hypnotised by the delivery of Jim Morrison. The waitresses stopped serving, the dancers stopped dancing, even the Go-Go girls in their cages, who were paid to dance all the time... And then Jim finally got to the end of his im- provisation and started mentioning his father and mother and everything went to hell.” Manzarek explained that this marked the end of the band’s time at the Whisky, as the owner fired them while telling Morrison that he was “the filthiest guy on this planet!”
Located at the heart of the Strip, this venue has for decades represented a rock’n’roll institution. The Rainbow Bar & Grill first opened its doors in 1972, when it hosted a party for El- ton John. The building had several uses prior to becoming the Rainbow. It had been known as the Mermaid Club during the 1930s, while from 1944 to 1968 it housed the Villa No- va restaurant. That wouldn’t be anything interesting in itself, had Marilyn Monroe not gone on a blind date there with Joe DiMaggio. The Villa Nova was owned by film director Vincent Minnelli, who proposed to Judy Garland there. Many believe that the Rainbow was even named after her, or more specif- ically after the song Over the Rainbow, but that’s quite cor- rect. During the early ‘70s, the word rainbow came to signify peace and freedom, which doesn’t mean that the great Ju- dy was forgotten. Throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s, at least 300 people would be in the parking lot outside this club every evening. It was a second home to Motorhead’s Lemmy Kilmister, which is why a bronze monument honouring him was unveiled in 2016 on the bar’s patio, where he would constantly hangout. Regu- lars have included Alice Cooper, Ringo Starr, John Lennon... Everyone – from Neil Diamond to Elvis Presley – could be seen at the Rainbow.
