The treatment of periodontitis
The role of oxygen in wound healing is well established in medicine, but its use in dentistry remains limited. This article presents a case in which an active oxygen product was used as an adjunct to conventional periodontal therapy. Periodontitis Periodontal disease is more complex to treat than gingivitis and typically requires a longer healing period. A 37-year-old healthy, non-smoking female patient attended for a routine examination. Although the patient presented with no caries or radiolucencies on radiographic examination, the gingiva around the lower incisors appeared slightly greyish and marginally swollen (Figs. 1 & 2). Intraoral radiographs revealed up to 50% interdental bone loss between the two lower central incisors (Fig. 3), while clinical examination showed probing pocket depths of up to 7 mm in the lower incisor region (Figs. 4 & 5).
