Spend your summer in Portland, Maine at the residential Pre- College program at Maine College of Art (MECA). Smith College Precollege Summer programs offer intellectually stimulating and unique opportunities for young women in high school who wish to pursue their academic interests in the classroom and beyond. Annually, these programs, offer 250 young women the freedom to explore challenging and intriguing subjects, to strengthen their college applications, and to increase their exposure to the Smith undergraduate experience while living and studying with other motivated and ambitious students

The Pre-College program at MECA is open to students who have completed their sophomore, junior or senior year of high school. Students will customize their individual Pre-College experience by choosing two majors from the following media: • Animation • Ceramics • Illustration: Comics + Graphic Novels • Fashion + Textile Design • Metalsmithing + Jewelry Design • Music: Composition + Collaboration • Painting • Photography: Black + White Dark Room • Printmaking • Woodworking + Furniture Design Pre-College faculty members include dedicated professionals who are practicing studio artists, instructors at MECA, as well as faculty from other institutions across the nation. The Pre-College program culminates with an exhibition of student work and a reception for students, family, and friends. Upon successful completion of the Pre-College program, students earn three college-level studio elective credits. In addition, Maine College of Art offers a merit scholarship of $1,500 for all Pre-College graduates who are accepted to MECA’s Bachelor of Fine Arts program. MECA’s 2019 Pre-College program runs from July 7 - 27, 2019. Throughout the program, students live in furnished suites in MECA Residence Halls while enjoying meals at the MECA Café, featuring a full-service food program with traditional, vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. Just a two-hour drive from Boston and a five-hour drive from New York City, Portland is a small, artistic seacoast city with clean air, safe streets, and amazing natural surroundings. It is filled with funky shops, an inspiring restaurant scene, and numerous coffee houses, galleries, theaters, and artist studios. Located in the heart of the Arts District in downtown Portland, Maine College of Art occupies the 150,000 square foot Porteous Building, a former department store built in Beaux-Arts style. This summer, enroll in MECA’s Pre-College program where you’ll live on MECA’s Portland, Maine campus, focus your work on two majors of your choosing, prepare an outstanding portfolio, and make lifelong friends. The application deadline for the Pre-College program at MECA is April 19, 2019, and certain majors fill up quickly. The program offerings include Summer Science and Engineering, Women’s Writing, Discovering Women’s History, Field Studies for Sustainable Futures, and a College Admission Workshop. Each summer, Smith welcomes to these programs young women from many nationalities and diverse racial and socio-economic backgrounds who together form an extraordinary intellectual community.
