Method Statement Skip Vehicle Activities Doc Ref: OP 203

• Use hazard lights and flashing beacons when operating on site. • Beware of high winds could cause waste to escape during tipping. • Engage rear tipping hooks

Safety Warning:

False engagement of tipping hooks on skips

Before you commence tipping the skip YOU MUST check that the rear skip tipping hooks are engaged correctly on to the lower tipping bars of the skip. A hazardous situation could occur if the tipping hooks fail to engage with the tipping bars correctly, but instead snag on the ‘lip’ of the container. The ‘ false ’ engagement could cause the skip to swing out over the back of the lorry. The momentum of the which could lift the front of the lorry off the ground or overturn the vehicle. • Lift the arms until all four chains are under tension. Then check all four chains for security. • Extend and move arms allowing skip to connect with hooks. Proceed to lift skip to discharge load. • It may be necessary to move forward a few metres to completely discharge load. • Once discharged, lower skip to body completely. Never drive with a fully or partially raised skip or arms. • Once the arms are lowered completely, clear the tipping area immediately and find a safe and suitable place to stop, turn the ignition off, put on the appropriate PPE and exit your vehicle before completing the following checks: ✓ The skip is completely empty and there are no contaminates left inside. ✓ The arms and all other hydraulic parts are stored correctly for transport. ✓ The rear lamps and reflective marker boards are clean and not damaged. ✓ The doors on the skip are closed securely. ✓ There are no stones, bricks, etc. trapped between tyres that could become a hazard to other road users or pedestrians. ✓ The chassis and body of the truck are swept completely clear of any debris. ✓ All warning lights are extinguished.

Tipping Compactors

Compactors do not tip like conventional skips due to the nature of their operation.

• Once in position to tip. Take up tension on the lifting chains and check connections for security. • Move the bin to the rear of the vehicle so just overhanging the rear. • Standing clear to the side, release security clasp and lower lever to open rear door. • Load will discharge.
