Four wheeled bins may be plastic or metal and can come in the following sizes, 1100ltr or 660ltr. Two wheeled bins are either 360ltr or 240ltr. All wheelie bins are ergonomically designed with grab handles to make them easier to move around. Four wheeled bins typically have four free moving castors which allow the bin free movement, and two of these castors are usually fitted with brakes so that the bins do not roll away. Two wheeled bins are fitted with a rear axle and are moved by tilting backwards and pulling or pushing. Where there is limited storage room or other restrictions customers may opt for sack collections instead of bins. All wheelie bins and sacks have maximum weight allowances which should not be exceeded to avoid injury to collection operatives.

Method for Emptying of wheeled Bins.

1. The collection vehicle must be checked according to company procedures prior to use. Due to the nature of the work, it is important to check all safety devices, such as beacons and emergency stop buttons, before commencing work. Record any defects and never use a vehicle with a safety related defect. 2. Collection vehicles must be driven in accordance with current legislation in regard to speed limits, weight limits, driver’s hour’s regulations, mobile telecommunications legislation and any local or national laws in place: i.e. bus gates. Vehicles should be driven at all times with consideration to the safety of other road users or pedestrians, particularly in a high-risk area such as town centres or schools where there are likely to be high numbers of pedestrians. 3. On arrival at a customer’s premises, operatives should find a suitable and safe place to park and display all warning lights to alert others that work is being undertaken. Before leaving the cab staff must check the area they are stepping on to ensure that it is even to prevent ankle/foot injury. When alighting the cab ensure three points of contact on the cab steps and the grab rails on the vehicle to avoid falls from height. Drivers must always ensure that the park brake is fully engaged before exiting the vehicle to prevent the vehicle rolling away and the vehicle gears are in neutral. The Power Take Off (PTO) must also be turned on. 4. Prior to any collection activity taking place, operatives should carry out a dynamic risk assessment of the surrounding environment to identify any potential hazards in the vicinity of where collection is to take place. This Dynamic risk assessment would include crossing footpaths where potentially pedestrians could be injured. Operatives should also note if there are likely to be any other obstructions or ground level changes such as kerbs etc. 5. Operatives approach the bin and lift the lid of the bin to confirm material in the bin is conforming and to check there are no rough sleepers in the bin. Operatives should try to move the bin slightly to judge the weight in the bin is not excessive to avoid any muscle strains. 6. Wheeled bins are pulled or pushed to the rear of the collection vehicle and offered up to the bin lifter comb. Once the comb has lifted the bin approximately 6 inches off the floor the bin clamp will engage, and the bin lifter will stop. Operative must walk around the side of the vehicle and stand in the safety area out of the arc of the bin lift to complete the lift and empty the bin. Once
