Method for Site Clearances/Bulky Collections
1. The collection vehicle must be checked according to company procedures prior to use. Due to the nature of the work, it is important to check all safety devices such as beacons and emergency stop buttons before commencing work. Record any defects and never us a vehicle with a safety related defect. 2. Make sure that you have the correct equipment with you. PPE, including spare gloves and brooms, shovels or rakes for gathering loose materials. You may also need sack trucks or other mechanical aids for moving items. Please check with the service team prior to making the collection ensuring you have the correct details of the clearance. Where larger clearances are required, additional staff may be allocated to the collection. 3. Collection vehicles must be driven in accordance with current legislation in regard to speed limits, weight limits, driver’s hour’s regulations, mobile telecommunications legislation and any local or national laws in place: i.e. bus gates. Vehicles should be driven giving consideration to the safety of other road users or pedestrians, particularly in a high-risk area such as town centres or schools where there are likely to be high numbers of pedestrians. 4. On arrival at a customer’s premises operatives should find a suitable and safe place to park and display all warning lights to alert others that work is being undertaken. Before leaving the cab staff must check the area they are stepping on to ensure that it is even to prevent ankle/foot injury. When alighting the cab ensure three points of contact on the cab steps and the grab rails on the vehicle to avoid falls from height. Drivers must always ensure that the park brake is fully engaged before exiting the vehicle to prevent the vehicle rolling away and the vehicle gears are in neutral. 5. Before the collection commences staff must conduct a dynamic risk assessment checking for hazards such as traffic and environmental conditions and plan their route to and from the vehicle. Operatives should note if there are likely to be any other obstructions or ground level changes such as kerbs, stairs etc. Any obstructions should be cleared and if there are restrictions discuss with the customer and service team. 6. Ensure that the collection matches the description supplied by the service team and that all paperwork is present i.e. Duty of Care Waste Transfer Notes or Consignment Notes where WEEE waste is being collected and that they are completed in full. Do not collect any material until this has been confirmed. Also inspect the material for any hazardous materials or sharp objects. 7. Using appropriate equipment provided (e.g. tail lift, sack trucks) and manual handling techniques the items should be loaded and secured into the back of the collection vehicle in a safe and controlled manner. 8. Once items are loaded on to the vehicle ensure that all items are securely stored within the vehicle. When using box vehicles/flatbed vehicles, the driver is responsible for securing all items with straps or ropes. If using wheelie bins on an open vehicle, then lids must be closed, and the
