THE GREAT PICKLE INCIDENT How a Tantrum Became a Teaching Moment

As a parent, I’m often caught in a whirlwind of activities, bouncing between soccer games, gymnastics practices, and the inevitable hunger pangs that follow. The tantrum that will go down in history as “the pickle incident” started just like this. After one busy morning, I went to pick up sandwiches for my family, expecting it would be an easy in-and-out trip. As time passed, my daughter started to get a little feisty and spotted a wrapped pickle on the counter. Once she had her mind set on it, she had to have it, and despite my best attempts, the next thing I knew, she was holding a dripping pickle bag over her head. This seemingly trivial incident spiraled into a tantrum in the restaurant, fueled by her reluctance to admit she’d opened the bag. I could feel my patience being tested — I was tired, she had lied, and now I had to make an additional purchase. I hadn’t planned on navigating a pickle crisis. After the chaos died down at home, I realized this was a great opportunity to teach my daughter about lying.

The tears turned into a heartfelt lesson about the importance of honesty, and it’s one she won’t forget. What started as an obstacle turned a tantrum into a valuable growth experience. In hindsight, I’m truly thankful for the “pickle” — metaphorically and literally speaking. It’s further proof of my belief that we don’t have any obstacles in life because all challenges are just opportunities that can fuel us forward. As Thanksgiving approaches and I reflect on what I’m most grateful for, I, of course, think of my family, clients, health, and friends. But “the pickle incident” is on my gratitude list, too. I practice gratitude every morning, journaling out why life is good and what I’m most thankful for. In the stressful environment of law, the reminder that every day is a blessing helps me reframe potential negatives into positives. In “The Obstacle Is the Way,” Ryan Holiday writes about turning trials into triumphs. This concept says there are no negatives, just fuel for your advancement if you can get creative and change your mindset. The old stoic philosophers believed that the obstacle in our path becomes the path. How can that impediment to your goal, that boulder you didn’t expect, work to your advantage? The things that feel like setbacks are potential goods if you can let go of your expectations of what you thought they would be. Navy Seal Jocko Willink, a podcaster and author, has a similar way of looking at challenges with gratitude. He talks about military experiences where perhaps they had run out of supplies or a mission was canceled. He chooses to look at the good of the situation. That canceled mission meant they had the opportunity to do something else important. I always try to bring this gracious mindset to the often complicated and emotionally difficult cases I handle. I deeply value the trust clients place in me and feel humbled to be seen as someone with the knowledge to tackle such important

Incorporating these flavorful and health- boosting additives will make staying hydrated more enjoyable and support your overall well-being. Drink up!

HOW ROUTE PLANNING COULD HAVE PREVENTED A COSTLY TRUCK ACCIDENT When Seconds Matter

The open road is filled with distractions, and a split-second decision can be a disaster for truck drivers. Truckers are required to plan their trips, plot out the route they will take, and anticipate detours and traffic. A heavy truck is more challenging to maneuver, and a lack of planning can lead to dangerous accidents that happen in an instant. One of our clients was involved in an accident with a large truck, an incident that could have been avoided with better preparation. Our client was driving in unfamiliar territory, making his way through a busy intersection. As he approached his exit, he realized he needed to merge quickly to reach it in time.

across another lane. Another car was also merging into the same lane, forcing our client to slow down ahead of the truck. The truck, which did not decrease its speed, rear-ended the client, injuring him. We were able to settle the case for six figures in our client’s favor, but it highlights the importance of route planning for both truckers and other drivers. The trucker was operating without a permit and should have anticipated what was happening. They should have accounted for the likelihood of cars merging quickly in the busy intersection and slowed down when they noticed the vehicle on the move. Had this truck driver been more prepared, they could have taken more proactive measures to avoid the accident.

We secured a strong result for our client because we could prove that the trucker had not adequately planned their route as required. However, a little planning on our client’s part could have helped to prevent this accident from ever happening. If he had a better sense of where he was turning, he could have navigated his way into the lane with enough time. We’re thankful this accident wasn’t more catastrophic, but it’s an essential reminder of how crucial preparation is for everyone. Be sure to check out our guide on page 3 for tips on how to effectively plan your route and stay safe on the road this holiday season.

AVOID LAST-MINUTE EXITS ROUTE PLANNING TIPS FOR HOLIDAY TRAVELERS

Pay attention to road conditions. Weather, traffic, and road conditions can also significantly affect your route, so look up forecasts ahead of time and ensure you know where there will be road closures or construction zones. Take a look at the expected weather conditions so you are prepared for inclement weather like heavy rain, fog, or hail. You can look up real- time traffic data and delays on Google Maps to anticipate when you’ll need to slow down and pay closer attention. Route planning is an important element of a safe drive and can ensure you are prepared for unexpected delays, heavy traffic, or unfamiliar areas. When you take a little time to pre-plan ahead of your holiday travel, it keeps everyone on the road that much safer.

The holidays are approaching, which means the roads will be busier. Whether you are driving to grandma’s for Thanksgiving or traveling for a family reunion, there’s a good chance that you’re unaccustomed to the route. Even if you have been to the area before, that stretch of highway or intersection may have changed since the last time you were there. Route planning is an essential safety step for your holiday drive. From mapping out your trip to searching for detours, this month, we’re sharing tips to pre-plan a safe journey. Map it out. Although most people instinctively use Google Maps and GPS to guide them on the road, it’s beneficial to map out your trip before it starts. Spend 5–10 minutes looking at your planned route to familiarize yourself

with key exits, any anticipated delays or roadwork, and a general sense of how long your trip may take. Understanding where busy interchanges are located can help you be prepared to use extra caution in high- traffic or congested areas. Plan breaks. If you will be driving a long distance, it’s wise to plan out breaks or overnight stays beforehand. Driving while fatigued can lead to accidents and cause you to lose focus behind the wheel. Identify restaurants, hotels, or rest stops on your route so you will have ample warning when their exits arrive. You can even add stops into route technology like MapQuest or Google Maps. Establish a schedule for breaks, like stopping every two hours.

issues. It’s taken time to reach this point in my career, and I don’t take it for granted. I’m truly thankful that I get to collaborate and work alongside clients to turn their complex situations into pathways for us both to grow. As I get ready to celebrate Thanksgiving with my wife (my hero who makes everything easier), my wonderful kids, and my favorite broccoli and cheese casserole, I’m reminded of everything I’m grateful for. I feel blessed to be a part of my client’s stories and to overcome challenges with them. Together, we transform obstacles into opportunities, finding good in even the messiest situations. I’m thankful for family, friends, this firm, and yes, even the pickle incident because everything we face is just another chance to learn and grow. Happy Thanksgiving. P.S. Exercise Healthy joints require regular exercise, and it’s crucial to stay active without overdoing it. A sedentary lifestyle with frequent or extended sitting can lead to weight gain and muscle tightness, making it more difficult for your joints to function. But overworking your joints can put stress or strain on them. So, aim for a mix of cardio, muscle conditioning, and strength training in your routine. Give your joints a break from sitting every 30 minutes by doing stretches for a few minutes. Diet Some of the tastiest foods, like red meat, french fries, dairy products, and sweets, are inflammatory and can trigger worse joint pain, especially for knee and hand osteoarthritis. When planning your plate, look for foods with omega-3 fatty acids, beta-carotene, fiber, and magnesium. Foods rich in these nutrients can reduce joint inflammation and lower cholesterol. Berries, fish, olive oil, leafy greens, and nuts are all great snacks to keep your bones healthy and your body limber. Making mindful adjustments to your exercise routine and diet are proactive steps toward preserving your joint health and enjoying a more vibrant, active lifestyle. Remember, small changes today can significantly improve how you feel and move tomorrow.
