AVOID LAST-MINUTE EXITS ROUTE PLANNING TIPS FOR HOLIDAY TRAVELERS
Pay attention to road conditions. Weather, traffic, and road conditions can also significantly affect your route, so look up forecasts ahead of time and ensure you know where there will be road closures or construction zones. Take a look at the expected weather conditions so you are prepared for inclement weather like heavy rain, fog, or hail. You can look up real- time traffic data and delays on Google Maps to anticipate when you’ll need to slow down and pay closer attention. Route planning is an important element of a safe drive and can ensure you are prepared for unexpected delays, heavy traffic, or unfamiliar areas. When you take a little time to pre-plan ahead of your holiday travel, it keeps everyone on the road that much safer.
The holidays are approaching, which means the roads will be busier. Whether you are driving to grandma’s for Thanksgiving or traveling for a family reunion, there’s a good chance that you’re unaccustomed to the route. Even if you have been to the area before, that stretch of highway or intersection may have changed since the last time you were there. Route planning is an essential safety step for your holiday drive. From mapping out your trip to searching for detours, this month, we’re sharing tips to pre-plan a safe journey. Map it out. Although most people instinctively use Google Maps and GPS to guide them on the road, it’s beneficial to map out your trip before it starts. Spend 5–10 minutes looking at your planned route to familiarize yourself
with key exits, any anticipated delays or roadwork, and a general sense of how long your trip may take. Understanding where busy interchanges are located can help you be prepared to use extra caution in high- traffic or congested areas. Plan breaks. If you will be driving a long distance, it’s wise to plan out breaks or overnight stays beforehand. Driving while fatigued can lead to accidents and cause you to lose focus behind the wheel. Identify restaurants, hotels, or rest stops on your route so you will have ample warning when their exits arrive. You can even add stops into route technology like MapQuest or Google Maps. Establish a schedule for breaks, like stopping every two hours.

issues. It’s taken time to reach this point in my career, and I don’t take it for granted. I’m truly thankful that I get to collaborate and work alongside clients to turn their complex situations into pathways for us both to grow. As I get ready to celebrate Thanksgiving with my wife (my hero who makes everything easier), my wonderful kids, and my favorite broccoli and cheese casserole, I’m reminded of everything I’m grateful for. I feel blessed to be a part of my client’s stories and to overcome challenges with them. Together, we transform obstacles into opportunities, finding good in even the messiest situations. I’m thankful for family, friends, this firm, and yes, even the pickle incident because everything we face is just another chance to learn and grow. Happy Thanksgiving. P.S. Ready to transform challenges into opportunities? This month, I’m giving away five copies of “The Obstacle Is the Way” by Ryan Holiday.
