issue between Rockland and Orléans-Ot- tawa is a key item. «That’s the big thing. We have to keep pushing the province of Onta- rio to work with us.» Desjardins believes that Clarence- Rockland can work with the City of Ottawa on planning a better commuter setup between their two communities. Even if Ottawa’s main focus is more on its planned light-rapid transit system expansion into Orléans. «I think it (LRT) would be an advantage to us,» he said. «If web ring that four-lane (highway) up to the Tenth Line (intersec- tion), where eventually the LRT end station will be, it will be more accessible to eve- rybody here, and a great access to Ottawa.» Closer to home, Desjardins noted that the city needs either a new or a larger in- dustrial park to help make more rooms for some local businesses to expand their ope- rations and also encourage more new deve- lopments. He sees potential for Clarence- Rockland attracting some light industrial or even high-tech sector investment in the future. «I had a talk with this one businessman, who was doing mostly computer stuff, he mentioned that he was looking for a place,» Desjardins said. «That is a good business development to have. They have 40 em- ployees working for them. That’s the kind of business we want to get.» Desjardins noted that Clarence- Rockland is in a central location for busi- nesses who have contacts in Ottawa,

tion bid. But he knew that if he planned to continue being involved in municipal poli- tics, just winning a third term as his ward’s councillor was not enough. «I still had lots of stuff to do, and I still had stuff I wanted done for my corner of municipality,» he said. «After two terms, it was a question of staying on or quitting. Staying on as a councillor didn’t appeal to me. There was only one position left. So I went for that one and this is where we are.» Looking back at his first 100 days as the new mayor, Desjardins is satisfied with the progress so far. The development charges issue was settled to the satisfaction of both the city and, most important, of the Cla- rence-Rockland Contractors Association and its members who now feel they are a valued and wanted part of the community. Getting the first budget approved with a zero-per cent property tax increase pleases Desjardins, and he is also very happy to have official confirmation of Helen Collier as the city’s new chief administrative offi- cer, a move which helps plant the seeds for Clarence-Rockland’s future development as she takes charge of creating a new and comprehensive strategic plan for the muni- cipality. Lookingaheadnow, Desjardins sketched out the «planting schedule» for growing a more prosperous Clarence-Rockland. «We need more business,» he said, ad- ding that solving the four-lane connection

A familiar sight at the Cumberland Farmers’ Market every year, Mayor GuyDesjardins fought hard to win his 2014 mayoral election campaign. But the real work didn’t begin until after the election as the farmer-mayor and his new council and municipal staff seek to cultivate a more prosperous future for the City of Clarence-Rockland.

Toronto, Montréal, and Cornwall. The community’s other advantage is that it can offer a more relaxed lifestyle for the people working at those businesses.

«We’ve got a great area,» he said. «We’re on the river. We’ve got agriculture. We’ve got everything (...). And if we don’t have it, it’s in the counties somewhere nearby.»
