State College (now University) earning a B.S. degree in 1956. After graduation, he entered the United States Army and served until 1958. He also obtained his master’s degree from North Carolina A&T State University with further stud- ies from Howard University, Louisiana State University and Claflin College. After his honorable discharge, he returned to his native South Carolina to work in the field of education. He worked 43 years as an educator with 34 years with the Colleton County School District. He served as a principal, as- sistant principal, physical education and science teacher, athletic director, basketball, football and baseball coach, building and grounds director. After his retirement, he served as a recruiter for Adult Education. Smalls was very involved in his com- munity. He served as a city councilman for the City of Walterboro for 22 years and several years as the Mayor Pro Tem. He served as a member of the Lowcoun- try Regional Airport Commission, past chairman of the Hiram Mann Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen, Sunlight Ma- sonic Lodge #221 where he was a 33rd degree mason, a Noble Shrine. He was a Lay Leader with Wesley Grove United Methodist Church as well a member of various other community organizations. He also served on the boards of South State Bank, past chairman of the Col- leton County Recreation Commission, and chairman of the SC Middle Schools Association. Smalls had received several awards dur- ing his career among them were Out- standing Contribution in the Field of Education by the Walterboro-Colleton Chamber of Commerce, Basketball Coach of the Year, and Kappa of the Year. Brother Smalls was preceded in death by his parents, his six siblings, and his daughter LaGayla Sonta Smalls Reed. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Lula Smalls; twin sons David and Gregory Smalls; son-in-law Fred Reed; three granddaughters, Imani, Karrington,

protected classes. He was a mentor to incoming students from Washington and Lee University and served as a role model for professional dress, business acumen and an exemplary work ethic. In retirement, he continued to remain a very active member of the community. He served as a mentor to the youth at the Mt. Ararat Baptist Church and the Three Rivers Youth Leadership Council. Smith also served on the Pittsburgh Pirates Minority Business Advisory Board, the Pittsburgh Regional Minority Purchasing Council, the West Virginia University Social Justice Board, Quinn A.M.E. Board of Trustees in Steuben- ville, and the Kappa Scholarship Endow- ment Fund. Smith was a member of the Pittsburgh (PA) Alumni Chapter where he participated in scholarship and event planning. He was an active member of the African-American Foundation Board of the African-American Chamber of Commerce and a lifetime member of the NAACP. He was a life member of Quinn A.M.E. Church in Steubenville, Ohio and also has attended Mount Ararat Baptist Church in Pittsburgh for the past 15 years where he was involved with the Mentoring Committee and the 501(c)3 MAC Board. Brother Chauncey W. Smith, Jr., is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Agnes Veal (deceased Novem- ber 2000), second wife Bernice Austin (deceased February 2018); sister, Emma Smith McGlotten and brother Phillip Smith. He is survived by sons: David Chauncey Smith (Michelle); Morris Allon Smith (Janice); and Collin Lee Smith; and seven grandchildren: Laura, Derek, Shannon, Kendall, Kamille, Ken- nedy and Sydney.

Chauncey W. Smith, Jr. 1937–2018 Father, Business Executive

Chauncey W. Smith, Jr, entered the Chapter Invisi- ble on Sunday, De- cember 30, 2018 at the age of 81. Smith was born on July 10, 1937 to the late Chauncey

W Smith, Sr. and Verma Johnson Smith of Steubenville, OH. Smith believed that hard work is the pathway to great reward. He started working at the age of 13 as a wall washer for his uncle’s com- pany and later as a server in his father’s catering business. He then became a Sales Associate at the Myers and Stone Men’s Clothing Store in Steubenville. After graduation from Steubenville Area High School, Chauncey attended Bowl- ing Green College (now Bowling Green State University) located in Bowling Green, OH where he earned a degree in Business Administration. While in college, he joined the fraternity as a 1959 initiate of the University of Toledo Chapter, the Beta Xi of the Kappa Alpha Psi ® . He later attained extensive train- ing from the National Employment Law Institute and the Equal Opportunity Advisory Council. Smith started his professional career at Weirton Steel from 1964 to 1974 as a Supervisor of Hourly Employment. He was employed by Verizon in Canons- burg, PA as the Supervisor of Employ- ment from 1974 to 1975. He completed his professional career as the Director of Equal Employment Opportunity / Com- pliance & Diversity at the H. J. Heinz Company from 1975 until 2013. While at Heinz, he championed for equal opportunity and equal access to all em- ployees regardless of race and all other
