84 TH GRAND CHAPTER MEETING: SUNDAY OF HOPE
Above: Rev. Dr. Moore stirred the hearts and minds of the congregation to heed his call to service. he was followed by Grand Polemarch Battles.
2013, Kaighn Avenue, in the spirit of Christian love, encour- aged Dr. Moore to leave his home church in order to serve as the Preacher-in-Residence at Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Philadelphia, PA; where Rev. Dr. Albert F. Campbell was the Senior Pastor for 47 years. Throughout his time as the Preacher-in-Residence, Dr. Moore developed and preached a contemporary “Hour of Power” morning worship service. Of course, the journey did not begin in 2014. “My journey into ministry and pastoral ministry was interesting to say the least. I had known since I was a child around the age of seven or eight that I had been called to preach. Be- cause even as a child when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up my response was, “I want to be a preacher.” This was a much different response from other children desiring to be an athlete. However, as a child people would look at me differently when I responded that way. As a result, I begin to stop saying it. In fact, I begin to do everything to not go into ministry simply because of how people responded. Conse-
quently, my career path went into a different direction.”
“After working for a number of years in the field of medical- based speech pathology I began pursuing a Ph.D. program in voice and swallowing disorders. It was during that time while completing the application process I felt my spirit the strong sense of moving into ministry. Again, I did not want to do it. Therefore, when the opportunity came to become a Deacon in my church I figured it was God’s way of giving me a way out of ministry. Little did I know it was God’s comical way of prepar- ing for ministry. And it was during this time that I stopped the application process for my doctoral program and began the process of applying to Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary now Palmer Theological Seminary. After about a year of deter- mining if I really wanted to go through with it, I enrolled as a part-time student in 2004. Even at that time I had no inten- tion of going into pastoral ministry. I only wanted to become a better prepared preacher.”
