Horace Anderson 1944-2021 Educator, VA Administrator
Horace Ander- son (San Antonio (TX) Alumni 1977) entered Chapter Invisible on June 30, 2021. Anderson was born on February 24, 1944, in Johnston, SC, to the parents of Woodrow Anderson
one of nine children to Ernest J. Horn and Lillie Mae Hightower in Grand Rapids, MI. He attended Ottawa Hills HS and was actively involved in foot- ball, basketball, and baseball, where he set records in each sporting event. In 1942, he enrolled at historic Wilberforce University, where he was the starting quarterback for the football team. After one year at Wilberforce, he was drafted to the U.S. Army, where he hon- orably served in World War II (WWII) from 1942-1945. In 1945, Horn joined semi-pro basketball and baseball leagues and eventually made it onto the roster for the famed Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Baseball League. In 1948 he enrolled in the University of Michigan, where he earned a B.S. degree and M.S. degree in social work. His Social Work career expanded from being a Probation Officer in Washtenaw County to many Executive Director po- sitions between Michigan, Rockford, IL, Utica, and Poughkeepsie, NY, until his retirement, where he was the Director of Child and Youth Services for the State of Michigan. As a Lifetime Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., he was a charter member of the Lansing Alumni (MI) Chapter. He was a proud recipient of his 50+ year white Kappa Alpha Psi blazer along with recognition from the Northern Province, Sigma Chapter, and Lansing (MI) Alumni Chapter. Brother James Horn was proceeded in death by his wife of 62 years, Gloria; sons, James II and Steven; daughter- in-law, Jacqueline Horn; grandson, TJ; parents; two brothers and four sisters.
to James L. and Leola (nee’ Floyd) Bowens on March 27, 1937, in New Smyrna Beach, FL. The Bowens family moved to Philadelphia, PA when he was three years old. Unfortunately, his father died three years after their arrival. The death of his father affected him greatly. Bowens attended the Robert E. Lam- berton High School where he ran track. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines in 1957 where he earned two Good Conduct Awards during his service. Before attending college, he obtained a real estate license in the early 1960s. He enrolled at the University of Buffalo (UB) and received an B.A. degree in political science. Bowens became ac- tive in politics and served as Democratic committeeman for ten years including three years while in law school. He earned a J.D. degree in 1971 from UB where he served as president of Black Law Students Association (BLSA). After law school, he was elected in November 1971 to the Erie County Legislature from the 6th District. He served until 1973 and championed issues to improve county government for his constituency and passionately worked to better the administration of the health department, drug programs and social services pro- grams. He also began his legal practice. After practicing law, he was then sought out to assist in helping at risk students at the Buffalo School system at the high school level. He encouraged several students to move beyond high school education into college and onto success- ful careers. He continued this career until his illness at the age of 81.
Sr. and Sara Andrews Anderson. He at- tended WC Edgefield High School and accepted Christ at an early age. He attended Morris College in Sumter, SC and began his teaching career after graduation. Horace served his country in the United States Military from 1968 to 1977. He then served on the staff at Cedar Hill ISD and retired from the Veterans Affairs Administration. He was a faithful member of the An- tioch Fellowship Male Chorus and was ordained as a Deacon at Antioch Mis- sionary Baptist Church, where he also served as an Armour Bearer. Horace Anderson loved sports but most of all loved to sing; he was a proud member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Frater- nity, Inc. Brother Horace Anderson is survived by his beloved wife Marie Anderson, daughters Joikeshia and Toimetria Anderson. Brothers William (Omelia) Anderson, Nathan (Louise) Anderson, Sisters Gayle Hall, Elizabeth Coates and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and friends. He was pre- ceded in death by his brothers; Charles Arthur Anderson and Woodrow Ander- son, Jr.; sisters, Pearl Jean Emmanuel and Mary Frances. Submitted by Kirk Nobles
