Patients are encouraged to give direct input on their goals for treatment and recovery. Most clients begin with the goal of ending their drug use, but eventually seek to improve other aspects of their lives that were also impacted by their addiction. Counselors work with their patients to explore possible factors of substance abuse.They function under the disease model, teaching clients that their drug use is not as simplistic as a bad choice they’ve made. It’s an important step for overcoming the disease: understanding that addiction is not just about the drugs.
