It was felt in view of the sudden ness with which certain liberal organiza tions had taken it upon themselves to link the organized Chinese church under a united leadership in the New Democ racy (one such leader recently stating that there was really no difference be tween the leadership of Karl Marx and the teaching of Jesus Christ!) that we evangelicals must reaffirm our determi nation to have no dealings with ungodly and unchristian activities of this kind, but instead, to form a united fellowship for the faith once for all delivered to the saints. A committee was elected from the floor for this purpose to bring its findings for discussion' and action at a later meeting to be called in . one month’s time. FLANNELGRAPH STORIES INEXPENSIVE - COLORFUL - FLANNELBLOT STOCK EVANGELICALS IN CHINA UNITE (Continued from Page 8) Hospitals are finding it increasingly dif ficult to continue due to financial diffi culties in income and taxation. 3. Incidents of great faithfulness un der strain and duress were cited. Re markably few Chinese have left the faith as was first thought quite possible. In one large city, during the turnover from Nationalist troops to Communist invad ers, a baptismal service was going on in a prominent church, and the congrega tion knew nothing about the episode until the meeting was over! A Chinese pastor who refused to evacuate was con fined to his house. When there was an opportunity to escape, he refused to take it, saying he must stay with his “ flock.” He was finally imprisoned, then released, and given a “ pass” "to go wherever he would and to preach the gospel freely! Others, however, have died for their faith.

That modernism has carefully organ ized over the years through YMCA ac tivities, National Christian Council pro grams, and higher institutions of learn ing; and that evangelicals, lacking the insight to see the necessity for a unity of purpose and fellowship, failed to or ganize to meet the present situation, is a very great tragedy. The failure to un derstand our position in a changing world in Asia lulled us to a complacency from which we are finding it difficult to recover. The weak emphasis placed by interdenominational missions on a high standard of trained Chinese leadership and the consequent falling back on de nominational colleges, in their use of men “ converted” from those circles, has been our undoing. Many of these are no longer in China. You cannot find outstanding Chinese leaders of education who can compare with the “large number the modernists have trained. There are hundreds of splendid, true evangelists and pastors but they are men who have had a very limited education and many with no thorough Bible training. Even those who have been able to secure a good Bible institute or seminary training are woe fully lacking in Other academic achieve ments. There are exceptions, but they are so few. In all China there is no fundamental college of the high stand ing of Wheaton College in Illinois. There are a dozen or more Christian colleges and universities of liberal leadership and these have prepared the way for the tragedy that we are witnessing in the church in China today! Thus the evangelicals have to submit, at least for the present, to a lost leadership which could have been retained had we followed a united constructive and posi tive program. This we now intend to try to correct before ALL Southeast Asia comes completely under the domination of modernist leadership. We need your prayers and your help. Will you please explain Matthew 10:28, where Christ said to His disciples, “ Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come?” In this chapter our Lord was not only giving the disciples instructions for their immediate work of witnessing; but He was also, as in the twenty-fourth and twenty-fifth chapters of Matthew, look ing on down the future, even to the time of His return to the earth in glory. The verse about which you ask was spoken concerning this future event, and refers to the unfinished testimony to the nation of Israel, when the 144,000 witnesses of Revelation will proclaim once again the message, “ The kingdom of heaven is at hand.” DR.
