of His Spirit. Let none of God’s people plead ignorance for persistence in evil things. It is their responsibility to know God’s will, just as it is the responsibili ty of the citizens of a country to know the laws of that country. The situation existing in Israel was a vicious circle as far as the relation be tween people and priests was concerned. It was “ like people, like priest” (9). They were one in guilt and would be one in punishment. It should be noted in this connection that the “ people” are mentioned first. People do have some re sponsibility in the matter of the charac ter of their spiritual leaders. A spiritual people will tend to develop a spiritual leadership. On the other hand, a spir itual leadership will tend to develop a spiritual people. Definite responsibility rests with both. This needs to be em phasized today. The Remnant’s Wise Decision Hosea 6: 1-3 Certain ones in Israel come to the realization that God really loves them. He has only permitted trouble to come into their lives because of their way wardness. They encourage one another to return unto Him that they may be spiritually healed. This is doubtless a prophetic utterance and refers to the future repentance of the remnant of Israel during the future Great Tribula tion. Israel has been dead spiritually and nationally for “ two days” but on the “ third day” their blindness and disper sion will be over and there will be a resurrection unto life, spiritually and nationally. God’s program waits for that day. It will bring blessing to the whole world. But repentance always precedes blessing. Helps for the Children Hosea and His Family Hosea 1:1; 4:1, 6a; 6:1, 3 Memory Verse: “The. ways of the Lord are right” (Hosea 14:9).

Pointers on the Lesson Hosea is the first and longest of the so-called “Minor” Prophets. His message is by no means minor. Hosea was a con temporary of Amos in Israel and of Isaiah and Micah in Judah. No prophet was ever more a part of his message than he. His unhappy wedded life pre pared him for his ministry to sinful and unhappy Israel. Hosea’s wife, Gomer, was unfaithful to him, but the prophet loved her in spite of her persistent sin. Even after her lovers had abandoned her to slavery, Hosea found her in the slave- market and purchased her and forgave everything, and took her back as the wife of his love. In all of this we have a mar velous parallel to the relation that exist ed between Jehovah and His beloved people Israel. His love for them was so deep that He was willing to forgive them their sin and receive them back into fel lowship if only they would repent. The Lord’s Controversy With His People Hosea 4:1-5 The prophet himself had graduated from the school of suffering. Now with a heavy heart he Stepped forth to de nounce the sins of Israel. The keynote of his entire message is struck in 4:1: “Je hovah hath a controversy with the in habitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.” The verses immediately following specify some of the social sins of which the people were guilty. The re sult of these persistent sins will be sor row and destruction (3-5). It is always so. Sin brings heartbreak, devastation, bondage and, unless God’s forgiveness is received, hell. The People’s Ignorance of God’s Ways Hosea 4: 6-9 The ignorance here referred to was a willful ignorance, as the words “my people” signify. God’s people have no excuse for not knowing the will of God. They have His Word and the guidance A P R I L , 1 9 5 0
