God used twelve men living in Old Testament times to write the books that we call “ The Minor Prophets.” These books were no less important than were the Major Prophets, but they were shorter books. The first of the Minor Prophets is Hosea. Hosea had a family. There were his wife and three children. The mother be came dissatisfied and left her family. Although they lived as well as they could alone, they were dissatisfied, sad, and lonesome. One day Hosea heard that his wife was to be sold in the slave market. He went to the market, redeem ed his wife, and brought her home again. God used this experience in the home life of His servant, Hosea, to bring a message to His sinning people. They had once loved and honored Him, but now they were seeking other gods. God still loved them dearly and longed to forgive them and to bring them close to Him again, if they would only let Him do so. God told His people through Hosea that one day they would return to Him and worship and serve Him as they had done before their idolatry. God still loves and longs for the love of sinners who have once yielded them selves to Him, but have wandered away from His house and His service. Those who no longer enjoy being with Hi3 people, praying, reading His Word, lead ing souls to Him, and walking in His way are a constant grief to the Saviour’s heart. Eagerly He awaits the hour when they will return to Him in sorrow and humbleness, and once again have the joy of their fellowship with Him restored. The Book of Hosea is the story of out raged divine love. God had poured out His heart upon His people, but, alas, there was little response to that love. Browning tells of the tragical story of the great painter, Andrea del Sarto. His unfaithful wife broke his heart. She ut terly failed to sympathize with him in his great work and to appreciate his masterpieces. She spent her nights in wild living, and when she would come home, she would smear with a daub of paint his priceless paintings. But what wounded Sarto’s heart was not that his wife destroyed his paintings, nor even that she lived in a way unbecoming to pure womanhood, but rather that she failed to realize the profound love which he had for her. This must be what wounds the heart of God. People do not realize His love for them. He finds so little response in their hearts. This week’s lesson em phasizes this love and shows the extent of its outreach.
