CEYLON AND INDIA GENERAL MISSION

56 years in India — still advancing. Write for information and literature.

The Lord wanted to show His love for the people of Israel who had forsaken Him, and He wanted them to know that He would forgive them and restore them to a place of fellowship. God’s love was acted out in Hosea’s life. He wants us also to know that He is able to save unto the uttermost all that come unto Him by Christ.

Object: A piece of paper 8% x ll inches. (Fold each end to within % inch of the middle, leaving a gap of V 2 inch. In this space print the word “HOSEA.” Open the folds, and using the word “HOSEA,” complete the following words, .“JEHOVAH, LOVED, ISRAEL, FOR GIVENESS and GRANTED.” ) Lesson: Last week we talked about the Old Testament prophet who had one of the most difficult tasks imaginable— that of marrying a woman who left home, and when she was sold as a slave he went, bought her and took her home as his forgiven wife. This prophet’s name was Hosea, and we see his name printed on this piece of paper. The great men of the Bible are often remembered because of one certain thing. Abraham for his faith; Moses as the law-giver; and David as a great king.

Here we see a complete circle, reminding us of this truth. The story of Hosea’s home life is one of the saddest in the Bible. His wife, becoming dissatisfied with her home and her husband, ran away and lived a life of sin, and finally was sold as a slave. Many people have acted on their own judgment and have made sad mistakes in marriage, but the Lord directed Hosea to marry this woman, knowing that she would leave him, for He had a particular lesson He wanted to Leach His people Israel. A little later we shall see what that lesson was. I am going to take these scissors and cut around the circle, showing how Hosea’s'w ife left him. (Begin cutting 1 inch from one side. After you have gone around once, you will be in a posi tion to split the remaining % by going around again. Let the short circle drop to the floor.) It looked for a time as if Hosea’s wife would never come back. (Spread the arms, with the large circle hooked over the thumbs, bringing the small circle up from the floor.) Look: the large circle, representing Hosea, lifts the small circle representing his wife. This is exactly what happened. His wife was being sold as a slave, and he went to the slave mar ket, bought her and brought her back to his home to be his forgiven wife. Now we see the reason for God’s tell ing him to marry her in the first place. A P R I L , 1 9 5 0

The prophet Hosea is remembered as an example of God’s forgiveness to the children of Israel. If I open this piece of paper on which “HOSEA” is printed, we shall better understand the signifi cance of his name. We read, “JEHOVAH LOVED IS RAEL, FORGIVENESS GRANTED.” The Lord wanted Israel to be sure that He would forgive them, and in addition to the example of Hosea and his wife, we have a statement made in Hosea 14: 1, 2, 4. “ 0 Israel, return unto The Lord
