A Note from Don Lough, Jr. As we enter the fall season, I am reminded of the opportunities this time of year brings for both reflection and renewed focus. Across every area of Word of Life, we are seeing God continue to work in powerful ways – through camps, Bible Institutes, and ministry partnerships around the world. Each new season brings new faces and new opportunities to share the truth of the gospel. Whether it’s a student stepping onto campus for the first time or a young person hearing the message of Christ at camp, God is using these moments to change lives. In this issue of The Word of Life Experience , you’ll read stories that reflect this ongoing work – from the life and legacy of this year’s Alumnus of the Year, to Reverb updates and stories, and a look at the impact of the new Florida Bible Institute Student Life Center. He Stayed Home, but God Pursued Him Anyway

Mitchell and his youth group had been praying for one of their friends to trust in Jesus. For months, this friend had been spiraling into destructive choices and insisted that he was certain God was not real. Even so, Mitchell continued to remind him that God is real and was always willing to have honest conversations about faith.

When Reverb came around, the friend chose not to attend.

At the end of the gospel rally, the speaker challenged students: “Who has a friend who needs to hear this message?” As the gospel presentation video played on the screen, Mitchell imme- diately thought of his friend and sent the video to him.

A few minutes later, his friend replied to the video that was sent to him:

“I’VE NEVER THOUGHT OF IT THAT WAY. JESUS REALLY DID ALL OF THAT TO PAY FOR OUR SINS.” HE ADDED, “I NEED TO GO TO BED NOW, BUT I’M GOING TO THINK ABOUT THIS MORE TOMORROW. I’LL TALK TO YOU IN THE MORNING.”

Mitchell arrived home from Reverb in the early hours of the morning, exhausted and ready for sleep. When he woke up around 2:00 PM, he opened his Bible, gathered the verses he wanted to share, and called his friend.

Before Mitchell could begin, his friend said:

“What are you talking about? I got saved four hours ago.”

“We had about 120 students during my year. We had some amazing teachers,

Terry Theis ‘76 and his wife, Carol (Koci ‘76) , now retired, Terry remains actively involved in his local church, Grace Community Church in Ontario, Wisconsin. Over the years, he has helped build a church and continues to serve faithfully in various roles. Looking back, Terry especially remembers loving life in the Adirondacks during his year at Word of Life. Maureen (Chute ‘77) Dean and her husband, Albert, live in New Brunswick, Canada. Maureen has faithfully served in both education and ministry, working as a teacher and missionary. She is involved with Canadian Sunday School Mission (One Hope Canada) and attends Milltown Baptist Church. She is currently teaching adult learners at Charlotte County Adult Learning in St. Stephen.

The habits, spiritual and personal, I developed at WOLBI stayed with me all my life.” – Maureen Dean ‘77 1980’s Stephen Davis ’80 lives in Georgia and has spent most of his career in IT, including systems architecture, ERP implementation, and work with USPS on a system used in more than 120 countries. Jodi Davis ‘87 is faithfully serving as a Word of Life Fellowship missionary in Japan since 2006. She currently serves as the English Dean with Word of Life SYME while also studying Japanese. Jodi attends International Church of Tokorozawa in Saitama, Japan, where she is actively involved in serving her local church. In addition to her ministry responsibilities, Jodi also sings in a local gospel choir, where she is currently the only Christian member. Roger Gural ‘87 and his wife, Sigrid, have been married since 1988. They have eight children: Rachel (37), Zachery (35), Vivian (32), Merrin (30), Oliver (28), Kharis (23), Elijah (17), and Kyrie (15). They also have seven grandchildren, including a set of twins. Roger serves as a Project/ Construction Manager for a public utility and is actively involved in teaching at Faith Bible Church in Sprakers, New York. Reflecting on his time at Word of Life Bible Institute, Roger remembers the strong teaching and meaningful fellowship that defined his year. Some favorite memories include being among the “Frozen Chosen of Norway,” [a dorm that is no longer named Norway] Open Air Campaigners in Manhattan, Island ‘87, and even blocking Phil Moser’s jump shot. Billy Kryger ‘88 and his wife, Rebekah, currently live in Kansas and have three children: Billy II, Jenna, and Jackson. They also have four grandchildren: Lilly (4), Michael (3), Liam (2), and Maidlyn (6 months). Billy serves as pastor of Berean Baptist Church in Council Grove, Kansas. He also works as an online ESL instructor and hospice chaplain. His ministry involvement includes preaching, teaching, counseling, writing for a local newspaper, online ministry, and Bible Institute teaching. James Miles ‘88 and his wife, Kathy, live in Ohio and have three children: James, Jacob, and Abbey. James serves as a paramedic with Hanco EMS, faithfully caring for others in his community through emergency medical services. 1990’s Peter Dearing ‘90 is currently living in Massachusetts and serving in IT support through his work on a helpdesk team. He attends Broken Chains Biker Church and is involved in motorcycle ministry, using his

Armitage (5), and Arya Armitage (2). Jon works at Chewy and attends Calvary Baptist Church, where he is involved in tract distribution and the church security ministry. Joel Kopf ‘86 '87 and his wife, Myrna, live in Idaho. Joel serves as a Forestry Technician for the Coeur d’Alene Tribe and attends Plummer Assembly of God. He is actively involved in ministry, including outreach to Native American communities, leading chapel at Union Gospel Mission in Spokane, Washington, and teaching a morning class for middle school students at his church.

Melissa (Marrale ‘94) Flom and her husband, Matthew, have two daughters, Gabriella (23) and Daniella (20). Melissa serves as Principal at Naples Christian Academy in Naples, Florida. She attends Covenant Church Naples and is actively investing in the next generation through Christian education. In addition to her time at Word of Life Bible Institute, Melissa is also an alumna of the School of Youth Ministry & Evangelism (SYME), attending in 1995 when the program included a winter quarter in Florida to help accommodate campers attending Snowcamp in New York. 2000’s Danielle (Christ ‘02) Foster and her husband, Achaz, live in New York City. Danielle serves as a high school humanities teacher at Manhattan Christian Academy and attends Apostles Church Uptown, where she is involved in kids’ ministry. “I enjoyed all of the friend- ships built during that year as we all had a common goal of learning the Word better and applying it through service and ministry. I loved my time at WOLBI and would recommend it to anyone! It is a special place because it provides a dedicated year, or two, to study the Word alongside like- minded people.” – Danielle Foster ’02 Philip Ross ‘04 and his wife, Megan (Richardson ’04) , have three children: Anderson (17), Mason (15), and Coralyn (12). They are currently based in Ocala, Florida, where they are investing in their family and community. Philip remains thankful for the lasting impact of his time at Word of Life and the foundation it provided for life and family. Mauricio Prunera ‘05 and his wife, Rachel ‘05 have been faithfully serving the Lord together since their time at Word of Life Bible Institute in Argentina, where they first met. They were married in November 2006 and have two children: Esteban (15) and Lidia (11). Mauricio serves as a church planter and pastor at Église Évangélique Baptiste

“My biggest memory isn’t from WOLBI, but from the School of Youth Minis-

tries, which I graduated from in 1987. Founder Paul Bubar taught a Wednesday evening class called “Bubarology,” where he talked about his outreach in then-communist Eastern Europe and offered a lot of commonsense advice. I wrote a song about Paul called “Wise Professor” that I often sing in churches and other applicable venues.” – Joel Kopf ’86 ’87 John Baird ‘86 and his wife, Becky, have three children: Julia (37), John Jr. (34), and Daniel (30), and three grandchildren. John currently serves as a Chaplain II with the Oklahoma Department of Corrections at the Jim Hamilton Correctional Center, opening the door to a unique opportunity to share the hope found in biblical Christianity.

James Flaming ‘17 and his wife, Emma, are currently living in Florida. James serves as Spiritual Coordinator at Warner University, where he ministers to college students. He also attends Heartland Church. Reflecting on his time at Word of Life Bible Institute, James especially remembers playing soccer under Coach Curtis S. and describes his year at Word of Life Bible Institute as one of the best seasons of his life. 2020’s Lorraine (Evarts) Smith ‘20 is currently living in Florida. She attends First Baptist Church of Hudson and remains grateful for her time at Word of Life Bible Institute. David Foreman ‘21 and his wife, Leah, are currently living in Georgia. David serves as the Youth and Young Adults Pastor at WestHills Church, where he leads and invests in both youth and college ministries. Since moving to Georgia in 2025, he has been enjoying this season of ministry and is passionate about preaching the gospel, encouraging believers, and developing student leaders. Grace (Shirley ‘22) Rocha and her husband, Guilherme, are enjoying this season of life together as they continue to grow and serve the Lord. Grace stays busy working parttime at Sheetz, babysitting, and taking online classes through Eastern University. They attend Calvary Church in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

After studying for four years at the Word of Life campus in San Miguel del Monte, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Mauricio went on to serve for ten years in El Salvador, his home country, before following God’s leading to France.

Reflecting on his years at Word of Life Bible Institute, Evan treasures the lifelong friendships formed during his first year in Owen Sound, along with the ways God transformed his identity and deepened his walk with Christ. His second year in New York brought more memorable experiences, including traveling with the worship team, meeting Kristen, exploring the Adirondacks, and participating in a mission trip to Thailand. He especially remembers seeing God move powerfully among the student body during that season. Grant De La Paz ‘16 and his wife, Paige, have three children: Zayn (8), Eden (4), and Christopher (10 months). Grant recently transitioned careers and now serves as a firefighter for the city of South Bend, Indiana. They attend Gospel City Church. Hannah (Heald ‘16) Davis and her husband, Austin, are currently living in New Brunswick, Canada, with their children: Adalyn (4) and Bodie (2). Hannah is a stay- at-home mom while also serving at New Brunswick Bible Institute, where their family lives on campus and Austin serves as full- time staff. She attends The People’s Church and enjoys serving both at the Bible Institute and in her local church wherever needed. Ron Dawson ‘16 is currently based in Hartville, Ohio. He works at Hankook Tire and attends Maranatha Bible Church, where he is involved in the high school youth group. “During Open Air Evangelism and summer camp, I was the closest I had ever been to full surrender.” – Ron Dawson ’16 Chandler Parsons ‘17 is currently living in North Carolina. Chandler works within the UNC Healthcare System and attends Millers Creek Baptist Church. Heather (Elliott ‘17) Hill and her husband, Ambrose, have two sons: Michael (3) and Gabriel (9 months), and are also helping care for Heather’s younger sister, Jasmine. They live in Pennsylvania, where Heather is currently a stay-at-home mom and attends Emmanuel Bible Fellowship Church, where she serves in the nursery and toddler ministry.

the Lord, learning to do ministry, and seeing examples of humble and courageous servants of Christ.” – Mauricio Prunera ’05 2010’s Cadi (Murphy ‘11, Florida) Parker and her husband, Jacob, live in Idaho with their daughter, Lucy. Cadi is a stay-at-home mom, investing in her family during this season of life. She shares that after many years of waiting, God brought her and her husband together in a way that was nothing short of miraculous. They were married in 2023 and are thankful for the way He has written their story and blessed them with their daughter. Christopher Hamilton ‘11 and his wife, Alicia (Lemos ‘11) , have three children: Theo (7), Lincoln (4), and Carter (2). Christopher serves as Youth Pastor at Northside Baptist Church, where he and Alicia recently relocated from South Carolina to help rebuild the youth ministry. Josh Crouch ‘13 and his family are currently living in Ohio, where he and his wife are enjoying life with their son, Everett (9 months). Josh serves as NextGEN Pastor at Discovery Church in Columbus, where he is actively involved in shepherding and discipling the next generation. Looking back on his time at Word of Life Bible Institute, Josh remembers many fun moments with friends, including orchestrating a surprise birthday party for Justin Cousins and late- night sledding adventures down Hungary Hill after Snowcamp with Jeremy Mosley and Skylar Vaughn. Evan Walker ‘13 ‘14 and his wife, Kristen (Baker ‘14) , are currently living in Quebec, Canada, with their daughters: Ellie, Naielle, and Vienna. Evan serves as a pastoral

Garrett’s favorite memories from his time at Word of Life Bible Institute was serving and spending time at The Pines. Charlie Clarke ‘25 is currently living in Delaware. He works parttime as a janitor at his church and serves as a first responder at his local fire station. Charlie attends Brandywine Valley Church, where he is involved in both music and production ministry. Looking ahead, Charlie plans to attend the fire academy. Ailsa Talbert ‘25 is currently living in Utah. She works fulltime in a bakery and is transitioning into ministry roles with Wellspring Ministries and Tri-Grace Ministries. Through her work in café settings, Ailsa is actively involved in outreach, building relationships, and sharing the gospel with college students and others in the community. Ailsa attends Ephraim Church of the Bible and has a heart for ministry, particularly in reaching those from Latter- day Saints backgrounds with the message of grace.

I Want My Life to Count: Peter Fretheim, 2026 Alumnus of the Year

“I grew up with all the things the world says should make you happy,” Peter said. “But I didn’t have Christ.” Peter Fretheim, our 2026 Alumnus of the Year, grew up surrounded by material abundance in Greenwich, Connecticut, one of the wealthiest communities in America. From the outside, it appeared he had everything he could ever need.

But something was missing.

At age 16, Peter attended a Young Life event where he heard the gospel in a personal and compelling way. That night, he placed his faith in Jesus Christ, and everything began to change.

Peter went on to earn a business degree from Pepperdine University and began working in New York City. He was climbing the corporate ladder and pursuing the kind of life many dream about. Yet God was stirring something deeper. “I remember looking around and thinking, ‘Is this really what I want to give my life to?’”

At 25 years old, Peter was older than many of his classmates, but he quickly found that the experience was exactly what he needed. Because of his age and hunger to grow, leaders such as Jack Wyrtzen, Harry Bollback, and George Theis took a personal interest in him. Their mentorship, combined with the intensive study of God’s Word and hands-on ministry opportunities, deeply shaped his life. Peter describes his year at Word of Life Bible Institute as “ the most trans- forming year of my life. ” It was there that God stripped away his self-reli- ance, clarified his calling, and led him to dedicate his life to missions.

Peter later attended Dallas Theolog- ical Seminary, where he met his wife, Miriam. Together, they began to pursue the possibility of serving overseas. In January 1999, they moved to Nigeria with a vision to reach vulnerable children and families, as well as the unreached, with the gospel. What began as a step of faith became a lifelong calling.

One thought stuck with Peter that he couldn’t shake: “I want my life to count.”

After coming to faith through Young Life and spending several years studying business at Pepperdine University and working in the corporate world, Peter sensed that God was calling him to something more. As he was being discipled by a pastor in Stamford, Connecticut, Peter shared his desire for his life to count for God. In response, the pastor encouraged him to attend Word of Life Bible Institute.

One moment early in his ministry remains deeply etched in Peter’s mind. While visiting a leprosy colony, Peter met the chief of the community. As Peter took the man's hand in his own, he noticed he was missing his fingers. Then, as he looked into the chief's face, he realized he had no nose. In that moment, while they were speaking together, Peter strongly sensed the Lord saying to his heart, "I want you to come back and give your life to these people." Peter never forgot that moment. “That was one of the clearest moments when I sensed the Lord saying, ‘This is where I want you.’”

For more than 27 years, Peter and Miriam have served in Nigeria, minis- tering to orphans, street children, and families in difficult circumstances, and sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. Their years overseas have included political instability, terrorism, health challenges, and countless uncertainties. Yet they have also witnessed extraordinary examples of God’s faithfulness.

They raised four children in Nigeria, all of whom are now walking with the Lord. “These days, all four of our children know Christ and are following Him,” Peter said. “That feels like a miracle.”

True Riches Looking back, Peter sees a profound contrast between the wealth of his childhood and the treasure he has found in Christ. “I don’t own all of those fancy things I had growing up,” he said, “but I now have true riches in Jesus.” That statement captures the heart of Peter’s story. He exchanged comfort for calling, worldly success for eternal purpose, and temporary wealth for treasure that cannot fade. Peter’s life stands as a testimony to what happens when someone fully surrenders to God’s plan. And it all began with a young man asking a simple but life-defining question:

More Than a Building

The new Student Life Center has quickly become the heart of campus life at Word of Life Bible Institute in Florida. What was once spread across campus is now brought together under one roof. Students study together in the library, gather in the lounges between classes, pray with one another in the hallways, and build friendships through the rhythms of daily life.

As students continue to make memories within these walls, one thing has become clear: The Student Life Center is making a huge impact on the growth, discipleship, and community life of each student at Word of Life Bible Institute in Florida.

A Peek at Life Inside the Building

Between classes and service assignments, students fill the lounges playing ping pong, studying together, and talking about life. What once may have been isolated moments in dorm rooms have become opportunities for deeper connection and encouragement.

A Place to Belong One of the most meaningful aspects of the new Student Life Center has been the way it brings students together naturally. “Sometimes we just chat; sometimes we pray; some- times we laugh, and sometimes someone just needs a hug or a shoulder to cry on,” shared student Emily Collins. “It’s such a sweet picture of community.”

I feel like I have really gotten to know my peers and have the opportunity to see them outside of class time because we now share a living space. A Staff Perspective For Michele Jones, who serves as Dean of Women at Word of Life Bible Institute in Florida, seeing the Student Life Center become part of campus life has been deeply meaningful from the very beginning.

“Excitement for the Student Life Center grew stronger as we watched it literally rise from the ground up,” Michele shared.

“The most significant change has been our closer proximity to students,” Michele said. “Being nearby and accessible has

enabled our entire Bible Institute team to be more thoughtful and intentional in their interac- tions with students.” It wasn’t long after move-in day that students were making the space their own – studying in the library, grabbing coffee in the café, spending time in the lounges, and staying active in the fitness center. More than anything, Michele sees the Student Life Center as a place where students can grow spiritually, build community, and prepare for life beyond campus. “The Student Life Center offers a safe, enjoy- able, and peaceful space where students can deepen their relationship with the Lord and build community as brothers and sisters in

Christ,” she shared. “This environment provides them with real-life experiences they can bring back to their communi- ties and local churches as they continue to live out their faith.”

A LIFE- SHAPING YEAR IN ARGENTINA

Bilingual Bible Program – Word of Life Argentina

Spend ten months in Argentina with the Bilingual Bible Program , where biblical teaching, Spanish immersion, and hands-on ministry come together in one unforgettable experience. Students grow in God’s Word, serve in local churches and camps, participate in mission trips, and experience the beauty of Argentine culture while building meaningful friendships across languages and nations. For current student Damaris Droese, the program has been “more than just a Bible school.” She shares, “It’s also a place where character is formed, helping me align my daily life with Jesus and teaching me to serve God wholeheartedly.”

Healthcare Trips Word of Life Healthcare Teams help meet physical needs while creating opportunities for spiritual encouragement and gospel conversations. Doctors, nurses, dentists, chiropractors, pharmacists, and other ministry-minded volunteers can serve alongside missionaries and local churches, offering care to communities around the world. These trips also encourage the missionaries who serve faithfully year-round, reminding them they are not alone in the work. Linda Meloy, a Professor of Pediatrics at Virginia Commonwealth University, has served on healthcare trips one week a year for 26 years. For Linda, these trips are more than an opportunity to provide medical care. They are a way to meet both physical and spiritual needs while pointing people to Christ. “I come on the medical mission trip with Word of Life because I love the evangelism that goes alongside the medical care we provide, as Jesus did when healing people. We’re able to heal with our medicines and provide both medical and spiritual advice. I love seeing new people develop a relationship with Jesus Christ and being able to talk with them about reading their Bible and having fellowship at the churches. All the Word of Life trips are associated with churches, and the pastors from those churches will do the followup with those people. I feel that is one of the most wonderful things about the trip – it’s not a separate one-day thing, but it’s part of being part of a community. And getting to work one-on-one with the Word of Life students as they share their faith is such a privilege.”

Word of Life Global Volunteer Program

Use What You Have to Serve Where You’re Needed Around the world, Word of Life missionaries are reaching young people, serving local churches, and sharing the hope of the gospel. Through the Global Volunteer Program, you can come alongside them in practical, meaningful ways. Whether you have medical training, construction experience, organizational skills, or simply a willing heart, there are opportunities to serve internationally and domestically.

Work Trips Work Trip Adventures gives volunteers the opportunity to use practical skills to support ministry around the world. Projects may include building cabins, repairing roofs, painting, pouring concrete, cleaning, preparing camp properties, helping with food service, organizing supplies, and more. For Ralph and Kim Simonds, volunteering has become a way of life. Since 2018, they have served at the New York property, with Ralph helping on building projects and Kim serving in the Local Church Ministries office. In 2021, they began serving internationally in the Dominican Republic, and they have returned every year since. They have also served regularly in Belize, helping with projects such as cabins and a dining hall. “We really love getting to know the missionaries in both of those countries and have a wonderful relationship with them,” Kim shared. Over the years, the Simonds have brought family members and church members with them, including Kim’s 86-year-old father. On one trip, 25 people from their church served together in the Dominican Republic. These trips are not only about completing projects. They are about strengthening missionaries, serving communities, and giving volunteers a firsthand look at how God is working through Word of Life ministries around the world.

Domestic Volunteer Opportunities You do not have to travel internationally to serve. Word of Life also has domestic volunteer opportunities at our ministry locations in the United States. Individuals, couples, families, and groups can help with projects, events, office support, property needs, and other practical areas of ministry. Every willing volunteer helps create spaces where students, campers, families, and guests can encounter the truth of God’s Word.
