Canterbury Christ Church University is seeking to make the crucial appointment to the role of Director of Digital Strategy and IT. Introduction. This is an exciting time to be joining the University. We are investing significantly in new digital and physical facilities, growing our online provision, increasing our reach into international markets and expanding our academic portfolio of Science, Technology, Engineering, Medicine and Creative Arts that will further support our region particularly in relation to the STEM Economy. Our new Director of Digital Strategy and IT will play an influential role in the realisation of these ambitions.
Reporting to the Deputy Vice Chancellor and a key member of the University Senior Management Team, the postholder will lead the development and delivery of the University’s Digital and IT strategies at a hugely dynamic time of change in the higher education sector. Key aspects of the role include working with leaders across the University to strengthen further the alignment between our learning and teaching strategy, research strategy and our digital offerings and transforming our students’, staff and stakeholders’ digital experiences.

Job Description
Overview This is the University’s senior leadership role in Digital Strategy and Information Technology. Reporting to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, the post holder will be responsible for the leadership, vision and strategic direction of the University’s Digital Strategy and IT provision. In addition, they will be accountable for the teams responsible for the development, provision, deployment and security of the information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure, enterprise applications, learning technologies, and web and business systems Key aspects of the role include working with leaders across the University to align the digital offering to our learning and teaching strategies, building on the success of the University’s high-quality digital and IT provision to students, staff and stakeholders.

Working closely with the Deputy Vice- Chancellor and other members of the Senior Management Team, the post holder will ensure: • Development and delivery of a compelling digital vision for the University. • Support for learning and teaching excellence, through the ongoing development of an integrated virtual learning and student communication environment, technology enabled learning spaces, and promotion and development of digital literacy. • Support for outstanding research and enterprise, through the ongoing development of an integrated research support and communication environment. • Robust, easy-to-use, accessible, cost-effective, integrated standards-based digital solutions that are customer-oriented and responsive to the expectations of key users and stakeholders across a large, diverse population. • Continuous enhancement of user experience through digital delivery of and mobile access to services in a 24/7 environment. • Clear policies, efficient business processes and demonstrable good practice. Principal responsibilities
1. To support the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor and senior colleagues in developing the strategic direction of the University and ensure that the Digital Strategy delivers appropriate services to support the delivery of that University Strategy. 2. To play a leading role in developing and delivering the University’s vision for digital strategy and IT provision. 3. To lead the University’s systems and technological strategic planning processes to ensure effective development and utilisation of the digital technologies, ICT infrastructure, client- driven enterprise applications, learning technologies, web and business systems. 4. To lead and manage the staff in the Digital and IT function effectively, promoting change, innovation and improvement in line with University values. 5. To create a work environment conducive to collaboration and teamwork, developing an integrated digital and IT workforce strategy to ensure the Digital and IT function has the breadth and depth of skills and expertise to meet its commitments and can evolve skills and expertise to meet future demands. 6. To lead the delivery of high-quality digital and IT services to students and staff, and ensure that the University is investing in appropriate IT and system development and achieving value for money, and that the associated institutional risk is managed effectively. 7. To work collaboratively and communicate effectively with all areas of the University, including the owners of major corporate systems, seeking and acting on feedback to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of services. 8. To lead and manage the University’s technical infrastructure including data and telecommunications networks, technical resources, data centres, IT architecture, client driven enterprise and business applications, learning technologies, web and intranet provision. 18
9. To identify, evaluate and inform the University on new and emerging technologies and opportunities, and advise on their applicability to the University environment. 10. To define, at a strategic level, the requirements for new developments and solutions, implement agreed project management arrangements and oversee the project portfolio for the Department. 11. To ensure that all digital and IT systems are well designed and appropriately scaled whilst maintaining a secure and stable computing environment which maximises system availability and performance. 12. To identify emerging threats to the University and ensure that IT security is managed effectively, including the provision of a robust IT disaster recovery and business continuity plan. 13. To ensure that the University’s information systems comply with relevant national privacy and accepted use regulations. 14. To ensure that all technology related policies and procedures, including data security policies standards and procedures reflect best practice and are implemented and adhered to. 15. To contribute and to take the lead where appropriate on wider University projects, polices and working groups as appropriate. 16. To operate as a senior leader within the University, developing and enhancing effective and collaborative relationships with key professional services and academic stakeholders across the University and with relevant external partners. 17. To represent the University at relevant stakeholder groups, local and national committees as appropriate. 18. To provide executive oversight for strategic vendor and partner relationship management. 19. To model the leadership and management behaviours of the University.

Person Specification
Qualifications • Relevant academic and professional qualification and attainment in a digital, IT or related subject. • A recognised management or post-graduate qualification is desirable. Experience and Knowledge • Experience gained at a strategic and senior level of leading a portfolio including digital strategy, development and IT infrastructure services across a large scale, complex organisation. • Track record of leading the development and implementation of strategy for digital and IT services resulting in transformational change. • Experienced manager of staff with proven skill in leading change and improvement in a digital setting or equivalent, including engaging and motivating staff, leading effective communication and developing strong partnerships. • Successful track record in leading and developing teams and individuals and in improving and maintaining high standards of professional practice. • Proven experience of using systems and technology innovation to undertake radical business process re-engineering across a large complex organisation. • A record of innovation and success in providing digital and IT services and resources aligned with institutional goals. • A record of effectively managing financial resources in a complex digital and IT environment. • Experience in higher education, and understanding of the principles of academic teaching, learning and research would be advantageous. • Familiarity with the specific challenges of providing IT services in an academic environment would be advantageous. 20
