JANUARY 2023

HANDLING THE TOLERATIONS LIST It’s Time to Get Organized!

We gathered and carved the turkey, hung our stockings by the fireplace, and trimmed the Christmas trees. We decorated our homes, threw festive holiday parties, and indulged in one too many holiday cookies. However, now that the holidays have come and gone and we’ve rung in the new year, it’s time to set some new personal and professional goals and aspirations. Right now, as we linger in the beginning weeks of 2023, there’s a mad rush to complete all of the goals set for 2022, and many people are scrambling to compile a list of things they want to accomplish in the new year. On my end, one of my biggest goals is to take care of myself, including working all my annual health checkups into my schedule. This includes the dermatologist, eye doctor, and getting the flu shot and shingles vaccines to maintain optimal health. In the office, now that 2023 has arrived, I’ve implemented a practice I adopted from one of my coaches. In life, we all have a “tolerations list.” We have little things we need to take care of that we only think about when they are right in front of us. For example, each time it rains and the gutters overflow, we are reminded to remove the leaves from the gutters, but within a few hours, the task escapes our minds. Maybe the clinic walls have some paint chips, but unless you’re looking right at them, you never see or think of them. Tolerations are tasks that you know need to be done, but because you don’t think about them until you see them, they burn up energy and, eventually, weigh us down. In the clinic, we

created a tolerations list of our own at the tail end of 2022. We then voted, took the top 10 items that required our attention, and planned to get them checked off. Managers went around our office with clipboards and looked at the office through a patient’s eyes, focusing on all of the items that would benefit from improvements. Once we gathered those items on a tolerations list and set out to accomplish them, we felt much better about ourselves. And just like we have an external tolerations list, our bodies have one, too. As we age, we may encounter a nagging back pain that prevents us from taking long drives to visit our family and friends over the holidays, or

we develop hip or knee pain and cannot walk up and down the stairs at home or in the office.

We limit ourselves by developing these tolerations, but in 2023, it’s time to set them free! With a plan in place, one by one, we can begin sorting through our own tolerations list to make our world a tidier, healthier, and happier place to live!

From our Pro PT family to you and yours, happy New Year! Let’s cut down that tolerations list!

Paramount Plus CBS All Access is now Paramount Plus, and that’s good news for viewers. The updated service still contains CBS network favorites and streaming originals — a must-have since CBS is the most popular network station among adults 65 and up. But Paramount Plus also offers a more extensive movie and classic television show collection. Plus, it has plenty of family-oriented TV shows and movies to keep the grandkids entertained. The service even offers live sports with an upgrade. Who can ask for more than that? Paramount Plus is just one more reason you can kiss cable goodbye. What’s on TV? STREAMING SERVICES FOR SENIORS

Cord cutting isn’t just for kids anymore — viewers 55 and older now comprise more than 25% of streaming viewership. Streaming television has countless benefits, but most of the content generated by popular services like Netflix is aimed at a younger audience. Fortunately, numerous other streaming services are available, many of which contain entertainment that older adults are more likely to enjoy. Here are three that will help you find fresh and relevant content. BritBox The BBC in England is renowned for putting out excellent content, but until recent years, much of it has been challenging to find on American television. BritBox solves the problem by mining its vast catalog to create the most extensive streaming library of British TV ever made. The service includes many classic comedies and dramas, adaptations of classic novels and plays, and newer content. British television has also historically been more willing to cast adults aged 60 and up as protagonists of TV shows, so you’ll have many opportunities to enjoy more relatable characters.

Get planning. First, don’t wait until the very last minute to start setting your goals in motion. Planning out achievable goals will require some brainstorming on your end. If you blindly begin tackling your resolutions, you’re likely setting yourself up for failure. Start out small. If your goal is to attend the gym five times a week and you haven’t been working out at all, starting out strong right out of the gate with intense workouts will likely lead to a quick burnout and potential injury. Instead, begin with lighter and shorter workouts, working your way up to the intensity you’d like to be at. Whether you’re aspiring to eat healthier throughout your day, read a book a week, improve your physical health, or work your way up to running a 5K, remember that change takes time. Undesired habits and traits take time to eliminate, and new and healthy habits take some time to develop and settle in. With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to setting goals that are achievable and realistic! Here’s to a great 2023!

4 TIPS FOR STICKING WITH YOUR RESOLUTIONS

The new year is the best time to take advantage of the fresh slate and turn over a new leaf. Many people set goals to change bad habits into good ones, reach new milestones, or visit new places on their bucket list. However, statistics have shown that by mid-January, many people give up on their New Year’s resolutions. In fact, Jan. 17 has been dubbed “Ditch New Year’s Resolution Day” or “Quitters Day.” This is largely due to setting unrealistic goals or failing to hold yourself accountable for the resolutions you set out to accomplish. Despite our good intentions, many of us don’t know how to keep our resolutions.

the holidays. However, when you’re this broad, it allows for a bunch of wiggle room. One day, you’ll feel that it’s okay to deviate just a bit from your ambitions, and the next day, you may deviate a little more, simply because you don’t have any set “rules” for yourself. Instead of choosing ambiguous resolutions, opt for a specific and achievable goal such as eating healthy every day of the week, allowing one cheat meal in that week, and making it to the gym four days a week for one hour. Don’t overdo it. Focus on just one goal at a time. While you may have a long list of areas in your life that you’d like to improve, focusing on just one thing will allow you to put all of your marbles into one basket and give it your all. Taking on too much at once can become daunting and can compromise your efforts to achieve your goals.

Here are four ways to make achieving your goals for 2023 easier.

Make your goals specific. Ambiguous goals are killers. A common New Year’s resolution is to lose weight or get in shape, especially after eating a few too many treats over
