HEALTH & WELLNESS IN 2019 HOW WE CAN HELP

Personal Story

Written by Adrienne Riveros AN ITALIAN ADVENTURE

In 2015, the four of us - Carlos, Daniel, Ashley and I - hopped the inaugural Lufthansa flight from Tampa to Germany and then continued on from there to Rome. It was a trip to celebrate my 30th birthday, but also to celebrate years of hard work since we’d all graduated college. It was a reset of sorts. Perhaps it was an outward symbol of an internal shift - a hypothetical mile marker that signified a turning point in our lives. When we first arrived, we didn’t even bother to rest at all. We got off the plane, dropped our bags off and began exploring all that was Rome. We spent 3 days there, soaking up the history and the culture. Then, it was off to Florence. Unexpectedly, thiswasmy favoriteplace.Located in Italy’s Tuscany region, we enjoyed the most amazing food and wine. We also strolled along the Ponte Vecchio, a Medieval stone bridge that is now home to jewelers, artists and street performers. It was there that we sat along the road at night and listened to the music while we rested our feet. We also saw Michelangelo’s David - a towering marble sculpture depicting David from the bible. Personal Story

Written by Adrienne Riveros AN ITALIAN ADVENTURE (CONTINUED)

We rented vespas, kind of like scooters, and acted like the foreigners that we were as we tried to abide by traffic laws and signs that we didn’t 100% understand. From there, we found our way to Venice - the floating city. I expected the gondola ride on the Grand Canal to be peaceful and romantic, just like in the movies. There was brief moment of that, but then the hustle and bustle of the Grand Canal had me fearing that I was going to get tossed right over the side at any moment! I checked that experience off my list and perhaps I might even do it again, but I’ll leave my camera behind next time. Actually, that’s lie - it goes where I go, so a dry bag it will be…just in case. All in all, it was a milestone for me - an artfully momentous occasion that marked one of the most beautiful shifts in the priorities of my life. When I arrived home, the trip had done just what I had desired. I had gone on a grand adventure with people that I loved. Now, I was ready for the biggest adventure of my life - one that I yearned for more than any other - I was ready to become a mother.

Written by Our Staff OUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS Welcome to 2019! This year, you may see a shift in the New Year’s Resolution trends. It is likely that we will see more of a focus on personal well-being and “whole person” health. For this issue, we have interviewed the staff members of Life In Motion. You will get a glimpse into what is important to each of our team members to help you get to know them better. While you’re at it, you may even find something that inspires you to work towards your own version of health and wellness. (Continued Inside)

Adrienne – I want to take at least one hour per week to do something that I love that is not work related - practice with my camera, journal, write, read, paint, sew, or work on a photo/video project. I also want to spend more time enjoying the outdoors with my family – minimum twice weekly.

Daniel – I want to improve my wrestling for MMA and spend more quality time with my wife and son.

Ashley C. – I want to focus on developing better sleep hygiene habits. So often I come home late and crash on the couch. I will focus on going to my bedroom when I’m sleepy, shutting down the electronics, and drifting away in a cool, dark room.

Carlos – I want to be able to run a 5K without stopping.

Ashley R. – I would like to bring ballet and fitness back into my life. I want to incorporate it into my life both for physical fitness reasons and strength/toning, in addition to the pure joy it brings to me. Ballet has always been a big part of my life and I miss it! Looking forward to it!!

Gaby – I want to put more time into the relationships Ivalue. Iwanttostopprocrastinating and learn to choose my battles. I want to drink more water and eat more salad:)

Visit our website for upcoming dates for our FREE community workshops. Click on Education and then on Workshops. Registration required.

Ted – I want to increase the number of raw foods in my diet like dehydrating vegetables and making raw date and nut balls for snacks. Since I have slacked off on running distances, I am planning to increase the distance of my two time per week runs from 2 miles to 6 miles, the distance that it takes to get to the beach and back. Justin – My first goal is to be back in the gym more consistently in order to get back to my normal fitness routine and physical appearance. I want to be in the gym 4-5 times a week. My second goal is to try to be healthier in terms of what I eat. Krysta – I want to learn basic sign language from my talentedsister. Iwant togetback into thegym daily and cook more healthy meals at home. I want to do more activities on the weekend while spending time with family such as bike rides and kayaking with my mom.

Devonte – I want to get back into a solid routine of going to the gym and playing sports recreationally since I had to stop because of my shoulder injury. On top of that, I have a weight gaining goal that I would like to achieve by June which is 190 lbs. I have lost about 20 pounds since September since I could not work out.

Tamara – I want a fresh start! I want to get back to taking rides in the Pinellas Trail with my family on the weekends. I also want to ride the whole PinellasTrail (one way only) all the way to downtown St. Pete once a month with my hubby.

Sam – I want to create a “future expense” fund and give myself 30 min of “me time” per week. I want to meal prep on the weekends for the upcoming week and cut back on my coffee intake.

DEEP TISSUE LASER THERAPY

Laser therapy treatments usually last between 2 and 10 minutes depending on the condition being treated. Laser therapy treatments must be administered directly to skin, as laser light cannot penetrate through layers of clothing. You will feel a soothing warmth as the therapy is administered. What to Expect Depending on the condition being treated, your therapy may be administered through either a contact or non-contact hand piece. The contact hand piece is designed to allow the

practitioner to physically manipulate the tissue while administering the treatment, resulting in a laser-massage treatment. This allows for light to penetrate deeper into tissues than the non- contact hand piece due to it’s ability to displace tissue through a laser-massage technique. Safety + Efficacy Medical lasers are cleared by the FDA and adhere tostrict ISOstandards inorder toprovide you with the safest non-invasive treatment option on the market. Most patients see results

within 3 to 5 short treatments. Our lasers work by flooding the tissue with photons, which energizes cells resulting in increased circulation to the injuredareaandultimatelypain reduction. Laser therapy allows your body to utilize it’s own healing powers by inducing a series of healing responses in your body. During treatment you will feel a soothing warmth that identifies the beginning of an 18-24 hour process of modulated cellular activity leading to decreased pain and inflammation.

HEALTH & WELLNESS IN 2019 HOW WE CAN HELP

When you say “Health and Wellness,” it means something a little different to every person. What you’ll find common around this time of year, however, is that many people have some sort of New Year’s resolution centered around it. There is just something about the start of a new year that helps to wipe the slate clean, reset the mind and empower a person to move closer to their personal wellness goals in 2019. We are going to see “Health and Wellness” move away from traditional models of the past and usher in a more balanced, whole-body-and-mind approach. In this issue of Motion Matters, we will discuss four tips to help you move toward a “Health and Wellness” makeover for 2019. 1) Be intentional. Often, time passes and we find that we’ve become busy with other things and our personal wellness goals get unintentionally pushed to the back burner. Without that extra bit of intension, it is easy to fall short of your own goals. Here are some tips to help you be more intentional: • Identify your big goals and write them out. • Be very specific. • Identify the smaller steps needed to get to your big goal. • Look at your goals often to help keep you on track. 2) Little by little goes a long way. Have you ever made a really big goal and jumped into it wholeheartedly with both feet? Have you made a 180-degree change and did fantastic…for a short time? When the demands of life present themselves, however, large changes that are new can often be hard to maintain because they take a great deal of time and effort. If your goal involves sustainability, you may want to try making smaller changes that you can be consistent with. Little changes, progressively sustained every day over a year, can really add up to a big change before you know it. The best part will be that it becomes a healthy, sustainable part of your lifestyle. 3) Understand the power of perception. What is it that people say – Perception is nine-tenths of the law? That makes perfect sense. Your perception of a situation and your mindset often dictate success or failure. This is true in therapy and in true in life. Why is it that we go to that friend who gives really good advice? It’s not because they change the situation, but because they might give you an alternate viewpoint that changes how you perceive the situation. If you find yourself frustrated, feeling defeated or like you’ll never make it to your goal, try looking at it from a different angle. Give yourself credit for what you’ve achieved so far and then get creative. Change your perspective.

4) Ask for help. If you find that you are having difficulty pursuing your health and wellness goals due to an injury, pain or an underlying musculoskeletal condition, seek out assistance from people who are experts in that field. Physical and Occupational/ Hand Therapists can evaluate your current symptoms and, ultimately, assist you in finding the root cause of your problem. They will also collaborate with the rest of your healthcare team in order to help you return to what is important to you as quickly as possible. If you have amazing goals for this new year, but feel as if you can’t physically achieve them due to pain (or even fear of pain returning), you may find the help you need at Life In Motion Physical & Hand Therapy. Give us a call us today! We’d love to get you in and chat about how we can help you return to the things you love!
