to whom our Biola evangelists were preaching seemed to be utterly indifferent. They were manifestly not taking in the precious message that was being delivered to them. “ It was one of those mysterious and discouraging expe riences that God’s messengers sometimes have to pass through,” says Dr. Keller, our Superintendent. A tailor was working away at his task and at the same time eagerly drinking in every word that was spoken by our workers. “ Thou knowest not which shall prosper, whether this or that.” That fevening the tailor sought out the evangelists to learn more o f the precious truths that had so stirred his soul. He decided to join their Bible study and prayer group. He took the keenest interest in these spiritual exercises, and the band, leader writes of him : “ Truly this is one whom the Holy Spirit has led to be a devoted disciple.” Pointing a Jewish Man to His Messiah Recently when Mr. Cooper, o f our Evangelistic De partment, visited a Jewish man in his home, the latter asked immediately, “ Who is Ben-David?” T o this ques tion attention was called to Isa. 9 :5, 6, which speaks of the birth of a child to the Jewish nation who would be called “ Wonderful;—-Counsellor,— M i g h t y God,—Everlasting Father,:—Prince of Ikxice.” This Jewish man asked, “ How could this statement be true, since there is but one God?” His,attention then was called to the fact that Israel’s Great Confession, which is translated “ Hear, O Israel: Jehovah our God is one Jehovah,” literally trans lated, is “ Hear, O Israel, Jehovah our Gods is Jehovah a unity.” This statement was still difficult for him to under stand. Hence, next his attention was called to the fact that the word translated God in Gen. 1:1 is in the plural and occurs in the same number in Ex. 2 0 :3, where it refers to heathen gods and is correctly translated as a plural noun. He was asked, “ Since the same form,, letter for letter, appears in both passages, if it is to be translated as a plural in one instance why not in the other?” Seeing the force o f the argument, he said that since the number “ 2” is the same in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York, the word, since it is a plural noun, should be translated as the plural in both instances. With great eagerness he asked for fur ther light on the subject and his attention was called to Isa. 48:12-16 where the statement is made that “ the Lord Jehovah hath sent Me [Him -who created the world] and His Spirit.” Upon asking Who these three divine person alities are, he was assured that they are the Ones o f Whom he read in the New Testament as God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. With great emotion and with the expression of deep sincerity in his eye he confessed, “ I believe that Jesus is my Messiah.” When the worker was leaving he clasped his hand and earnestly requested that he return shortly to give him further light on some very important matters. Will you pray that this man may be restored to perfect health and that the way may be opened up for his return to Europe that he may preach the Gospel to his people, as he has in a later conversation affirmed is his intention.
Th e H ills o f G od B y E thel R ichardson The hills o f God are high, are steep, And they who climb these hills must weep; Their tears thus sown are not in vain, The fragrant hills o f God are fair, Each upward step is gained by prayer; These prayers are gathered all above. And bound into a golden chain To guard and hold the ones we love. Climbing the hills o f God we mourn, Our hands are o ft by brambles torn; The blood thus shed does mark the way, For those who follow day by day; So prayers and blood and tears are one-, To guide the weary traveler home. But blossom into shining stars To lighten those upon the plain.
How Prayer Quelled a Riot On one occasion definite plans were made by the Com munists to come to the Biola Chapel in Hunan, China, and burn all the Scriptures and all other books related to the Gospel. The church members, fearing personal vio lence, made all preparations to flee in case o f necessity. Our evangelists gave themiselves to earnest prayer, and when the rioters came to do their awful work the evan gelists went to them frankly and in the power of the Spirit began to reason with them. They went away with out raising a hand to do the things they had planned. The report says:— “ Apart from the great power of our Lord, how could such a thing have been?” How the Holy Spirit Uses Our Words How frequently we have cause to be grateful for our Master’s parable of the sower, for His clear statement that some seed falls by the wayside, some upon rocky places, and only a certain portion falls into good soil. In the “ Village of Three Pools” in Hunan, China, the crowd
The French infidel Voltaire realized that there is some stupendous force back o f the Christian’s weekly day of rest and worship. He said: “ W e shall not destroy the Christian faith, till we have killed the Sabbath Day.”
