And straightway their thoughts were turned into another channel and the point of controversy was forgotten. “ ‘But why don’t you say something else?’ asked one, on a certain day. “ ‘Tell me something bigger:and to say,’ was the quiet and smiling a fis^ u i ‘and' I will be glad to say it!’ - “ His voice is still now; his tongue: «ilg, silent,’ for he went gladly; glbwingly^filS '-1 the presence of Him who said; in a ’wbHd, full o f strange,-misleading Wordsj :j?Be- Iieve also in me.’ ” Paul Begins To Work For lesim i - Acts 9:19-30,; 11:19-30; i§ ? Explain to them that it tells us about Jesus’ who died to save us, and about His HolyiSÌifit, whom He hai- ’¿ent to live in our hearts to teach us the will o f God. He shows us Jesus as .. pur Saviour, as the light -shows, us /objects- near to .us which we ,-could n ot know were . near ;to - us ........................... without ,,the.light.. The Bible, gives us all truth and we may be messengers o f God by sending it to those who dò riot have it and do not know about Jesus. (Primary Teàcher.) . Lesson Story. —Review, (Write upon the, board—- “ Saul.” ) Did you "ever héar that name before?: What have you heard ribout him? (Let different(children tell, emphasizing the need ' of (always doing what the Lord Jesus a sk su sfo do.) T o day we have another story about Paul. He is now one of Jesus’ truest friends. As soon as he received his sight and was baptized he began to preach Jesus. He told' the people about his conversion p.feóàfr he had been an enemy, but that’ Jesus' had forgiven him. He told them all he knew about Jesus, and tried to get them to love Him too. ; I f we truly, loye Jesus, w e.w ill want others to know Him too. When those who had been Saul’s friends when he was persecuting' the Christians, saw that he was truly convert ed,. they planned to kill him. . They .were afraid he might escape, so they watched the gates of the city day and night,. Some o f Paul’s .new friends heard Of -his danger and warned' him and planned for mis escape. (Picture this thrilling escape; and make it real to the boys and girls.) God had work for Paul to do, and He, allows no one to destroy His servants .while their work on earth remains undone : whatever their enemies may. be allowed to do with them here, He has for them in heaven a- great reward. Some of the Christians Paul persecuted before ■his conversion went .away as far as Phenice (show on map) ('som e (vent to Cyprus—this island here in the great sea; others went as far as Antioch. W,e will make a little mark here, for that Is thè city we are going to talk most about. When the church at Jerusalem heard that many o f the Gentiles in Antioch had turned to the Lord) they sent Barnabas to them. Barnabas was a very -,good man,

tians, but-reports o f their fruitful labors' in Antioch. They were evidently impa tient to get back to Antioch and take up their interesting work. So we. see thorp in o.ur; chapter ,for today .back- at Antioch, having brought with them “John, whose surnarite was. Mark” (12:25). ( The Antioch church at this time took a distinct step, in .advance. Among its mem bers ..were men endowed By the Spirit of prophecy and teaching—Simeon called Niger (the black),- Lucius o f .Cyrene (the African ..cityGfrorir which -Simeon had come when he was compelled to bear the cross o f Christ, Mt. 27:32 thus identify ing Simeon), and Mariaen,. fostef-hrothgr o f the Ilerod w ho ha!d been ruler of (j!aii- lee when our Lord was crucified." As these men were giving themselves fo fast ing and prayer, they were divipelyi led .to separate Barnabas and Paul for a wider ministry,- “ They laid their -hands , on .them and sent them away” ' (v. 3). It, is important that we should- under stand the significance-of. their laying on of hands. It was riot the impartatiori.bf the Spirit. They had both received this gift. It was: not ordination to the appstleship. They could not confer the office which (hey. did not possess. Paul, insists In all pis letters that he did nop receive apostle ship through, any human ,agency. It wgs not ordination to the ministry. / They had been in the ministry for some time.' Then what was it? It was separatiori of them, a formal designation of . them, to' a great missionary enterprise. The :Church had seen- that the Gospel was-intended for. the world, whether Jew or Gentile. They saw, also, - that the' churches: mjjst , pledge themselves to sus tain and encourage, missionaries in. the arduous work o f carryirig, the/Gospel, to the heathen, Hence, this, was no, ordinary ordination’ service,., It .was .a.'speciul ap pointment of two eminently qualified men to a work which;was' np; private, venture, but the recognized task o f the church as a whole.,:Thus we see how the foreign mis sionary enterprise was born. When Jesus left this'earth, he gave His great commission o f our Golden Text. .His followers seemed slow to act upon it. Many earnest converts- were made" among the Jews at Jerusalem, but they'organized no effort for the sending of the Gospel to other cities and lands- Their riationa! ex clusiveness, seemed t o ‘ hold them back. The Jewish ritual did riot prevent men of other race's from becoming proselytes to the Jewish faith, but it did nothing to in vite them. The tendency was to isolate the Jew rnore and more. The first Christians Carried much" of their spirit ipfo the. church. This,is. clear frofn the careful procedure'of’ Philip in
