When he heard o f the missionaries, he sent for them, that he might hear from them about the true God. They found with the deputy a sorcerer, a man who pretended to be able to do great wonders. The deputy believed in him, but he was a false prophet. He made the deputy believe he could tell him what was going to happen, and for this the deputy paid him money. He was a Jew and knew about God; he knew that if the deputy listened to the missionaries, and believed them, he would not have him around any longer, so he tried to keep the deputy from listening. (Tell how God’s Holy Spirit showed Paul the wicked heart of this man, and how he was blind for a time.) When the deputy saw what was done, he believed, for he saw that God had great power, and his soul was led from darkness into light. But the sorcerer— what of him ? His eyes were in darkness, but, worse than that, his heart was full of sin, for although he knew o f the true God, he would not obey Him. Knowing of God will not save us unless we believe and obey. The missionaries then went on with their journey, preaching the Gospel as they went. I hope some of you boys and girls in this room will go as missionaries when you grow up to be men and women, but we must not wait until we grow up, for we can tell others about our Lord right now just where we are. Then there is something else we can do. W e can pray and give money to send others who are ready to go now, and for those already out on the field. (Prayer.)

FRED S. SHEPARD ’S BLACKBOARD OUTLINE C ALLED TO T T TITNESS h o s e n t o W o r k Go and bring forth fruit.—Jno. 15:16. one about Jesus since last Sunday? Did they listen to you? Some people do not know about Jesus and do not care to hear about Him. Jesus has left us here to be His missionaries to tell others that He died for them to save them from their sins. Did any o f you ever see a mission ary? Tell us about them. Would you like to hear about the first missionaries that went away in a ship to preach the Gospel to the people? I will write their names here on the blackboard. “ Paul,” “ Barnabas.”« You will see they are old friends of ours. From this time on Saul was called Paul. God called them and sent them to preach to the people in other countries. W e will watch their journey and trace it on the map. They started from Antioch. Then we will draw this red thread from here to the next place where they stopped, which was Seleucia. Then they sailed to Cyprus. Cyprus is this island; they preached here at Salamis, then they went to the other end of the island to Paphos, which was an important city, and the deputy o f the country lived there. He was a heathen but was ready to learn o f the true God.

Holy Spirit: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you ; and lo, 1 am with you alway, even unto the end o f the world (Matt. 28:19-20). The Duke o f Wellington once met a young clergyman who, being aware of the duke’s former residence in the East, and o f his familiarity with the ignorance and obstinacy o f the Hindus in support of their false religion, proposed the follow ing question: “Does not your Grace think it almost useless and extravagant to preach the Gospel to the Hindus?” The duke immediately rejoined, “ Look, sir, to your marching orders: ‘Preach the Gospel to every creature.’ ” Paul and Barnabas Sent as Missionaries Acts 13:1-52.
