It is related that when Robert Louis Stevenson was a little child, he accidentally locked himself into a room alone one day. H e could not turn the key again as he was directed. Darkness was coming on, and his terror became extreme. His father sent for a locksmith to open the door, and during the period of waiting, talked to Louis through the keyhole, the child becoming so engrossed by the Charm of his father’s conversation that he forgot all his fears. And so our heavenly Father’s still, small voice dissipates our fears and makes His helpful presence real to us in the midst o f trials that have apparently locked us in from worldly aid.

J une 27, 1928 Text: Psa. 55:22

Hannah Whitall- Smith once knew a woman who carried a heavy burden that was driving sleep away and undermining her health. She has told the following o f how it was banished: “One day when it seemed' especially heavy, she noticed lying near on the table, a little tract called ‘Hannah’s Faith.’ Attracted by the title,, she picked it up and began to read it, lit tle knowing that it was to create a revolution in her whole experience. “ The story was o f a poor woman who had been carried triumphantly through a life of unusual sorrow. She was giving the history o f her life to a kind visitor on one occasion, and at the close the visitor said, feelingly, ‘Oh, Hannah, I do not see how you could bear so much sorrow.’ “ ‘I did not bear it,’ was the quick reply; ‘the Lord bore it for me.’ “ ‘Yes,’ said the visitor, ‘that is the right way. .We must take our troubles to the Lord'.’ “ ‘Yes,’ replied Hannah, ‘we must' do more- than that: we must leave them there. Most people,’ she continued, ‘do take their burdens to Him, but they bring them away again, and are just as worried and unhappy as ever. But I take mine and I leave them with Him, and I come away and forget them.’ ”

A gentleman once said to a baggage master on a train, “Are you a Christian?” The answer was, “Yes, sir, I am a trunk Baptist.” “What is that?” asked the gentleman. “My wife and I are church members. W e moved to Savannah and our letters are in our trunk,” the train man said with perfect candor. There are a great many of these “trunk Christians” around us—people who move into the country from the city, people who got their letters, put them in their trunk and when they arrived at their new-home left them in their trunks, ostensibly until they should find a church that was agreeable, but in a great many instances the letters stayed in the trunks.
