Besner Moves On Following the difficult loss, the Hawks faced another setback as top scorer Brayden Besner was called up to the Blainville-Bois- briand Armada of the QMJHL. The organization expressed gratitude to Besner and his family for their trust in his development, acknowledging the challenges ahead with the loss of both Besner and Rémi Gélinas, another top scorer who joined the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in December. Combined, the two players accounted for 45 goals and 85 points this season. Despite these losses, the Hawks remain optimistic about their depth and are com- mitted to their goals for the season. Junior hockey, the organization emphasized, is about developing players and adapting to changes. Looking Ahead The Hawks currently sit fourth in the Yzerman Division with a record of 17-12- 2-1, just three points behind the Cornwall Colts. Their next matchup is against the Pembroke Lumber Kings on Wednesday, Jan. 8, followed by the Ottawa Junior Senators on Friday, Jan. 10, and the Brockville Braves on Saturday, Jan. 11. The Hawkesbury Hawks’ fortunes are split at the beginning of the new year, as they kick off 2025 with a win and a loss during their first week back on the ice. Their new fortunes started off strong with a home fixture against the Renfrew Wolves on January 3. The Wolves were the first to set the pace with a ninth-minute goal, but Brayden Besner (Gabriel Pelchat, Jacob Skoczylas) brought the Hawks back to level terms just 38 seconds later. With two and a half minutes left in the first period, Besner was once again key for the Hawks, putting the home team ahead by one before the bell. A goal late in the second period, howe- ver, brought the teams to 2-2, leading to a scoreless third period and then a scoreless overtime, which forced the game into a leng- thy shootout. Neither team seemed eager to score in the shootout, with 18 total shots and just three goals, two for the Hawks. Besner was awarded first star for his brace, and Alexis Trudeau earned third star for securing the winning shootout goal. Outshot Against Kemptville Heading to Kemptville on Sunday, Jan. 5, the Hawks were first to score again against the 73’s, but not until the second period. Seemingly a miracle, the Hawks managed to keep the 73’s at bay throughout the first period despite coughing up 10 minutes’ worth of penalty time, allowing 14 shots against and only taking eight of their own. In the second, in addition to the goal from Maxime Charbonneau (Jakob Medeiros, Fernand-Olivier Perron), the Hawks upped the pressure with 13 shots on goal to Kemptville’s 12. Unfortunately, Kemptville capitalized on two of those opportunities soon after before Gabriel Pelchat (Trudeau, William Brown) scored the final goal of the period just inside the seventh minute. Skoczylas reopened the scoring in the third with a ninth-minute goal (Brown, Perron). However, the 73’s added two more to take control at 4-3 before scoring an empty-netter in the final moments of the game, making

Les Cougars ont connu un début difficile pour la seconde moitié de leur saison, s’inclinant 6-3 face aux North Dundas Rockets lors de leur premier match de 2025. Malgré l’ouverture du score à la onzième minute du premier tiers, les Rockets ont dominé l’équipe visiteuse avec cinq buts consécutifs sans réponse, marqués tout au long des premier, deuxième et troisième tiers. Ce n’est qu’à moins de huit minutes de la fin du match que Cody Horner (Andy Lightle-Blais) a marqué pour Vankleek Hill, suivi de Callum Nystrom (Zachary Bigras) 34 secondes plus tard, permettant aux Cougars de réduire l’écart. Cependant, ces efforts sont arrivés trop tard, car les Rockets ont inscrit un dernier but dans un filet désert, portant le score final à 6-3 en faveur des Rockets. Avec 24 matchs joués, les Cougars affichent une fiche de 16-7-1-0, les plaçant à la quatrième position, à égalité de points avec les Rockets. Les Cougars affronteront les Metcalfe Jets à domicile le samedi 11 janvier.
