Preheat is not mandatory. The preheat and interpass temperatures used in qualifying the welding procedure shall be essential elements of that procedure to be applied in production welding. Depending on welding process used, preheat and interpass temperatures from 500*F to 800*F may be necessary to ensure crack- free weldments. Preheat is not mandatory.
