The bulls have been fed rations developed by JR Distributing, Lake Norden, SD. Their program of low energy and high forage really fits our bulls and is utilized by many other seedstock producers, Angus and Simmental, so that you can directly compare gains and condition. Fall bulls are raised on grass only from about May 10th until spring bulls are weaned. At that point all bulls go on feed/ test together.

Bulls will be semen checked and scrotal measured by AA Breeders, Justin Curtis, prior to the sale. Data will be online with a supplement sheet available. We will reserve 30% semen interest, US and Internationally, on all bulls selling. Contact Jeff for more details or concerns. Bulls picked up sale day will receive a $100 discount. All bulls will be unconditionally guaranteed and delivered free of charge for the first 150 miles around May 1st. Insurance is recommended on bulls left at the farm as we will not be responsible for injury.

Lynda and I have officially entered the “running to grandkids ball game” era. It is fun and exciting to watch them play and reminds us both of when Steve was in sports and Michelle cheerleading. Lynda is retired, yet continues to volunteer helping seniors understand Medicare and health insurance through the Senior Health Insurance Information Program. With all of the current excitement in the cattle business it has certainly increased the level of interest in our cattle business. I really enjoy all of the genetic and management discussions! Michelle and Todd seem to stay busy with work and running kids around— gymnastics, baseball, football and now basketball. Todd is coaching basketball and you can tell he loves spending time with the boys doing something they all like. Michelle continues with her vet practice and Todd with Acrisure insurance. It appears to be a good fit for both of them. Eli continues to love sports and is extremely good at all of them. He is very quiet, very caring and a great older brother. He and Paisley learned to run the side-by-side this year. I’m sure that thing circled the cattle lots 1000 times this summer. Like grandpa, I can envision horses in his future. He is old enough to run his mare a bit and he loves that. W elcome to our Sale of Value Based Genetics!!
Noah, Todd, Evelyn, Michelle & Eli
Noah amazes me with the knowledge he comes up with. He is constantly studying history or world events, and is not afraid to correct grandpa when he’s wrong. He found his voice this year and certainly likes to practice it a lot! Our bottle calf show together was one of the summer highlights. Eve, aka “scooter” according to grandpa, almost likes being held upside down more than being right side up. She’s still loving “nastics” and always lets you know exactly where she stands on everything. I’m quite sure there will be more than a few sleepless nights while she is growing up with her imagination and smarts. Steve and Bri love living in Prior Lake and very much enjoy the amenities and all of their friends. They also have hit the sports era with Paisley and Porter. They spent a lot of time fishing and hunting together and all seem to love the out of doors. Steve continues as property lead for Target and Bri is a director with Be the Match, the national marrow donor program. Paisley really enjoyed softball this year and was the home run hitter for the team. She learned to run barrels and poles with her mare, Lena, this summer and enjoyed it almost as much as grandpa. She is a sweetheart and loves to sing me songs and laughs at all of the really dumb things I come up with. Porter is really into farming. I glanced at a video he was watching and thought I saw a sprayer so I asked. He told me they were side dressing 20 units of nitrogen on the corn. Pretty amazing for a 5 year old. He enjoys tractor rides and especially feeding round bales, but realistically, anything related to farming or hunting.

I am extremely fortunate to have the support of all of our young people helping to get this all done. Maddie Fitzgerald, now Hrdlicka, is now with the Decorah Vet Clinic. Extremely nice to have 2 vets in the family! She and Austin are into training and breeding hunting dogs. Weekends are full with training dogs though Maddie still finds time to stop in and sample Lynda’s pie occasionally. Wouldn’t want them to go to waste she says. Erin Ryan showed for us at the Iowa State Fair and did a wonderful job. She and Wes Searcy became engaged and are currently planning a wed- ding. She graduates from ISU this spring with an agronomy degree and we are extremely proud of her. Kamryn Langreck is in her 5th year helping and really a great young lady. I am extremely fond of picking on her as she takes it very well with great comebacks. She’s currently working near Iowa City in Extension yet spending a lot of weekends here. Autumn Feine has graduated from ISU and was in the packing industry for a time. She now does videos and pictures and editing of livestock and helps a lot again here. She is very meticulous and organized. Hopefully some of that will rub off on me. Kimmi Vrieze contacted me this fall and is back helping with cattle chores and everything sale related. She has really gotten into cattle dog training and breeding. She is also planning a wedding next fall to Christian Cooper. We are very fortunate to have her back. She’s a really great worker. Cale Knight gets the award for most improved. He was a town kid and I’m not sure knew which end of a cow the poop came out of. He is a darn good tractor and skid loader jockey now. He works cattle quietly and has turned into a really good clipper. I’m glad he joined our team as he’s a really great young man! Mike Wilson continues to help whenever needed. You never replace a friend or cattleperson like Mike. He knows the cattle and how to make things run smoothly. He ended up on picture crew this year and you would almost think he is an old steer jock now. We all had a lot of fun work- ing together to get through a really interesting job. Jacob and Bailey Kach's heifer had her first calf this year. According to Paisley, who is 3, they are hers, and she is showing them at the state fair Jacob, Bailey, Paisley & Colt Kach
this year. Jake is a really great young man and has developed the con- fidence and ability to go far in the cattle business. He has turned into a fantastic herdsman. We are blessed to have him. I have enjoyed watch- ing him grow as a person. Bailey is expecting late February so hopefully you will see them at the sale. However, as long as everyone is safe and healthy that is all that matters. I’m really blessed with great help!! I couldn’t do this without you guys. Thanks much. Our production partners have the same goals and commitment to producing superior seed-stock that we do. Please take the time to get to know each of them. - Some Things Stay the Same - Every year seems to come with its own unique challenges. One thing that has not changed is that calves sired by Springer Simmental bulls continue to work. They calve without issues, have excellent growth and consistently top sales for their owners. Females produce at the top of their contemporary group and carcass premiums are realized in the feedlot. Utilizing every tool possible we have concentrated on foot quality, natural thickness and hip length. Females with beautiful udders and natural instinct for their calves with ease of fleshing and the ability to wean huge calves. A quiet disposition is a must, no exceptions. We have genomically tested some of the herdbull candidates to increase the accuracy of their EPDs. Buy with confidence that our bulls and females will perform as expected or we will fix it.
- Reap the Benef its of 46 years of Selection!!! - In the last 46 years we expect a heifer to nurture a calf without issue. She has to have an attractive udder with longevity and be easy to work with. She is expected to breed back within 30 days of her initial calving and make a positive impact in our herd. That means quality and quantity both. Anything less and she is culled. If the calf doesn’t nurse on its own in 2 to 3 hrs they are flagged and not kept back. Vaccinations are a must, but that calf needs to stay healthy and vigorous or they are flagged. He needs to look like a stud and she a princess or they are flagged. They also need to grow at the top end of their contemporary group, or they are flagged for cull. Females need to grow out on a limited ration and breed in a timely manner and still look like a princess. Bulls must grow fast on low energy feedstuffs and look like bulls. They need large testicals, not just testicals. They need to semen check at an early age. That doesn’t mean at 16 months the day before turn out and the vet says well maybe. We utilize EPD’s as a tool for guidance and record everything we can get our hands on. I dislike adjustments as cattle mature at different rates and stages. Almost certainly adjustments tend to be false at some point. After 46 years of following this program we cull or even flag very few. Our cows are as consistent in kind and type as you will find. Buy with confidence, you will be receiving the benefit of all these processes!!! REMINDER: I have a list of buyers looking for feeders sired by our genetics. Please call before you sell them and I will make them aware of the details of when and where you are selling. Every fall I get calls of producers looking for bred females carrying our genetics .
