Mills, one of the largest employers in the

district,confirmeditwasproceedingwith

a modernization of its steel mill in

L’Orignal.

The company announced the decision

to the employees at about noonDecember

22, said Richard Leblanc, staff

representative with the United

Steelworkers.

For the past several months, Ivaco, a

division of Heico, and employees have

been working together in order to exert

pressure on the federal and provincial

governmentstofinancethemodernization.

Builtin1971,themillneedsanoverhaul,

said El Roskovensky, the president of

Heico, duringaMaymeetingwithOntario

government officials.

The improvements will make the rod

mill more efficient, improve emissions,

reduce energy consumption and save the

unionized workers demonstrates

employees’ commitment to cooperating

with management, said Leblanc during

the meeting. Employees agreed to

concessions after Ivaco had said it would

close the foundry in July.

Following the union decision, the

company indicated it would cancel plans

to shut the foundry and would proceed

with improvements.

Many area residents are making it too

easy for thieves to victimize them.

That is a conclusion of a recent crime

prevention blitz carried out by the

Hawkesbury Police Explorers. Members

carried out parking lot crime prevention

inspections around local businesses,

reminding shoppers that thieves areon the

lookout for vehicles at risk.

People who had left their vehicles

unlocked, orwhohad left valuable items in

plain sight, received a friendly reminder

from the Police Explorers.

Crime statistics show that over 80 per

occur in the parking lot.

With two of the 106 vehicles inspected

the doors were unlocked while in 15

vehicles, valuableswere inplainview. Five

other vehicleswere found to be vulnerable

for other reasons. “It only takes a few

seconds for a thief to steal something from

your car. It also takes just a few seconds to

put yourvaluablesout of reach, and to lock
