ALEXANDER SCOTT-MALDEN

“He loved the feel of steel in his hand.”

On the 22nd September 2011, the state of Texas stopped giving inmates on death row a last meal. This served as my inspiration. The death penalty is a process by which society decides a life is no longer worth living. This act of dehumanisation was for a long time tempered by the last meal, as it was the final show of compassion to even the most heinous criminal and served as a reminder that everyone, whatever they have done, is still a human being and deserves to be treated as such. To this end I wrote the story from the point of view of the chef who physically delivers this compassion on behalf of society.
