MATTHEW STONE

“And in this pillar of forgotten moments I live.”

Time was a very important concept in modernism, often focusing on just a single point of epiphany, or indeed jumping around creating a disrupted linearity. In this story, the persona resides within Big Ben, a symbolic tribute to time on the London skyline; just the fact that it is a clock, a symbol of order and monotony, shows man’s subconscious search for an icon of authority. In the novel Mrs Dalloway , Virginia Woolf suggests its “leaden circles dissolved in the air” as it chimed; I try to replicate this concept with the description of Big Ben as a “pillar of forgotten moments”, an irrevocable passage of time.
