“When I began my career, I really knew nothing com- pared to the people working in paper mills for 30 years. The only way you can succeed is by listening to those peo- ple’s challenges and opportunities and help them to be successful and remove the barriers in their way. If you can de-bottleneck another person’s or another team’s prob- lems and help them be more successful, then you’ve won because they’ve won.” No Regrets Looking back on his career, Porter says he would not do anything differently. “I’m proud of how this has all turned out. There have been so many forks in the road, and I’ve had to make many decisions and choices. I’m sure some weren’t the best, but I always remind people that if you make a bad decision, just make a good one quickly thereafter. You’re going to make mistakes and fall down, but don’t worry about that. Get up quickly and make anoth-

Most im- portant, win the right way, with character, integrity, respect for others. Not win at all cost. Win, but do it with dignity. More difficult, but when you do, you’ve really won. “There is nothing I would change in my career. It has been a wonderfully rich experience and I’m so blessed to have met all the wonderful people I’ve worked with. These people today are still the center of my memories and my wife Pam and I hold those relationships of employees, cus- tomers and suppliers in very high regard. We hope those relationships last a lifetime.” Throughout the years he has had many mentors. One of his first was Bill Lansing who worked at Menasha in the Land and Timber Division. Others included Steven Gross- man, Joe Palmieri and Jack Schwarz. He notes there were also many other friends and leaders that helped him and the entire paper packaging industry grow and succeed.
