April Gardening: The Month We All Pretend We Know What We’re Doing… After months of winter, April finally arrives and sud- denly everyone remembers they own a yard. The sun comes out, the birds start chirping, and we step outside thinking, “This is the year my garden is going to look amazing.” Of course, that confidence usually lasts about ten minutes until we realize we have no idea where the gardening gloves went last fall. April is the perfect time to start preparing garden beds. Winter leaves soil a little tired and compacted, so turn- ing it over and adding compost helps wake everything back up. Think of it as giving your garden its morning coffee after a long nap. Clearing away old leaves, sticks, and winter debris is also a good idea you might even find a tool you lost last summer. If you’re eager to plant, April is great for cool-weather flowers. Pansies and snapdragons are hardy little over- achievers that don’t mind chilly mornings. They bring color back to flower beds and make it look like you really know what you’re doing. Vegetable gardeners can also get a head start. Lettuce, spinach, peas, carrots, and radishes all enjoy cooler temperatures. The bonus is that some grow quickly, meaning you might harvest something before the neighborhood rabbits discover your garden. April is also the unofficial “clean up the yard and wonder how everything got so messy” month. Trim- ming dead branches, clearing old plants, and adding fresh mulch can make a big difference and it’s a great excuse to enjoy the fresh spring air. Just remember that spring weather can be unpredict- able. A warm afternoon can quickly turn into a chilly night, so keep an eye on the forecast and protect young plants if frost makes one last appearance. The truth is, gardening in April doesn’t have to be per- fect. Most of us are just happy to be outside again. And if a few weeds show up along the way… well, we’ll just call that extra greenery .
