While we have become a global institution, we respect our history. In 2018, we celebrated 175 years since our ground-breaking institution began in Coventry. Our origins in Coventry as an industrial city serve as a reminder of the need to ensure that our courses reflect the needs of individuals and employers, that our research should have “originality, significance and rigour” with a world-leading reputation, and that our engagement with business in enterprise and innovation should support social and economic prosperity – all within a local, national and international knowledge economy. A focus on growth and continuous improve- ment in teaching and learning, research and internationalisation has seen the University rise rapidly in both the Guardian University rankings and in the Times and Sunday Times Higher Education UK rankings.
Through an approach that is partnership driven, entrepreneurial and sustainable, both financially and operationally, we are recognised within the higher education and business sectors as leading edge. Our reputation reflects an institution that is confident in its mission, in itself and in its consistent execution and delivery of objectives. We recognise that our staff are central to the success of the University Group and continue to build the capacity and capability of our people to achieve impact on the quality of teaching and learning, research outputs and impact, enterprise development and our ability to operate globally. In recent years Coventry’s student satisfaction levels and teaching quality have been rated amongst the best in the UK, culminating in being awarded The Times and Sunday Times University of the Year for Student Satisfaction 2019, which in turn has led to impressive rises in every major university league table. The institution is the country’s top modern university in the Guardian University Guide 2019 in which it ranks 13th overall – and is The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide ‘Modern University of the Year’ for 2014, 2015 and 2016. In 2017 the University achieved the top accolade, TEF Gold, in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), published by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).
A total of 134 higher education institutions took part in the TEF with just over 30% achieving Gold, meaning that Coventry scored higher than several Russell Group institutions. The TEF judging panel noted that Coventry - where the focus on outstanding teaching and student experience sits alongside developing research excellence - has: • “Consistently outstanding student support services to all students, in particular those from disadvantaged backgrounds, that assessment and feedback that effectively supports students from all backgrounds towards progression and attainment” • “An outstanding institutional culture that places emphasis on recognising and rewarding excellent teaching” • “An outstanding focus on employability and developing entrepreneurship skills that are highly valued by employers.” The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 results portend well for the ambitions that Coventry University has going forward – the university was ranked joint 5th in the UK for the quantity of its research in the allied health professions category receiving the top ratings of four or three stars, with many other areas also being rated as ‘world leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’. support retention and progression” • “A rigorous and critical approach to
