THE HUB The Springfield Sangamon County Transportation Hub—known as The Hub—is planned to open by the end of 2027 as a bold new front door to the county and capital city in Central Illinois. Designed to bring people, history and innovation together under one roof, The Hub will serve as a central link for Amtrak, Sangamon Mass Transit District (SMTD) and Greyhound, creating a seamless connection between local, regional, and national travel. But its impact reaches far beyond transportation to show why this area is truly the place to be. County leaders envision the project as a powerful economic catalyst, drawing visitors and investment to an area poised for transformation. By anchoring new retail, dining and cultural experiences, The Hub is expected to spark fresh energy downtown and inspire a new wave of growth that extends outward through the city’s core. Inside, travelers and locals alike will find much more than a place to catch a train. The Hub’s airy, light- filled concourse will feature a grab-and-go café and thoughtfully designed exhibits celebrating the community’s shared story—among them, an exhibit about the 1908 Springfield Race Riot, the Springfield–Sangamon Sports Hall of Fame and potentially a display dedicated to the First Citizens of Sangamon County.
It will also include a large way-finding feature that will guide guests inside the building and to featured places in the community. Modern design meets digital artistry in the facility’s signature feature: a one-of-a-kind transparent LED Sky Theater that transforms the ceiling into a living canvas, hosting immersive shows each evening. When the doors open, The Hub will be far more than a transportation center—it will be a statement about Sangamon County’s future. By weaving together movement, memory and imagination, it stands as both a tribute to the county’s past and a beacon for what’s next: a vibrant, connected and welcoming downtown where people don’t just pass through—they stay, explore and belong.
