GETTING SETTLED
Vehicle Registration If you are new to Illinois, you’ll need to register your vehicle within 30 days of establishing residency. Vehicle registration is handled through the Illinois Secretary of State, and Springfield residents can visit a local Driver Services facility to take care of everything in person. What you’ll need: • Your out-of-state vehicle title (or lienholder information) • Proof of Illinois auto insurance • A completed vehicle registration application • Payment for applicable fees Costs to expect (approximate): • Passenger vehicle registration: $151 per year • Title transfer fee (if applicable): $165 • Additional fees may apply for specialty plates or liens Where to go: • Illinois Secretary of State Driver Services Facilities in Springfield (Appointments are recommended; some services may be available online at cyberdriveillinois.com.) Once registered, you’ll receive Illinois license plates and a registration sticker.
Driver’s License The Illinois Secretary of State offers an online Facility Finder where you can find the location nearest to you. If you are looking to apply for your first driver’s license, make sure to check the Services Offered at your location to make sure the facility offers “First Time Issuance” for a driver’s license. Voter Registration To be eligible to vote in Sangamon County, you must: • Be a United States Citizen • Be 17 years old on or before the date of the Primary Election and turn 18 on or before the date of the General Election • Live in your election precinct at least 30 days prior to Election Day • Not be serving a sentence of confinement in any penal institution as a result of conviction • Not be claiming the right to vote anywhere else You may register to vote at any time, in-person at the Sangamon County Election Office located in the County Building, 200 S. 9th Street, Room 105. Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
