June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month and Red Apple Day was on the 16 th June 2021. Ward 8B (Gastroenterology, Upper GI and Colorectal surgery) organised a fundraising event on Tuesday 15 th June 2021 to raise awareness of Australia’s second deadliest cancer and raised funds for the leading community-funded charity, Bowel Cancer Australia, dedicated to prevention, early diagnosis, re- search, quality treatment and the best care for everyone affected by bowel cancer. Bowel Cancer Awareness Month
There were displays of information booklets, educational and fact sheet posters for visi- tors, patients and staff. Goods were baked by Ward staff; Portuguese tarts, carrot cakes which were sold as a whole before 9am, po- omoji cupcakes, cookies with “ We give a crap” stamp, Krispy Kreme donuts with rasp- berry jelly to imitate stoma and the best of all cupcakes made into a Bristol Stool Chart displaying all types of bowel motions with type 3 being the most popular ones. Also there were Bowel Cancer Awareness ribbons and wristlets and raffle tickets for everyone to get a chance to win big hamper boxes full of goods. Baskets full of the Red Apples were also for sale which unfortunately, was- n’t very popular.
Bake stall and raffle ticket sale were very successful raising more than $2000 by the end of the day. All funding was donated to Bowel Cancer Australia to support them and to appreciate their commitment in raising awareness of Bowel Cancer around Australia.
A huge THANK YOU and congratulations to everyone who has participated and made contributions to the fundraising day. We look forward to next year’s Bowel Cancer Awareness Month and Red Apple Day.
