Partnering with Consumers (Standard 3: Action 3.3) The intent of this Standard 3 action is to ensure that clinicians partner with patients to prevent and manage healthcare-associated infections and implement an antimicrobial stewardship program which;
Actively involves patients in their care
Meet the patients information needs
Share decision-making
Discussions with patients and/or carers should occur when:
Any new MRO is identified
A potential or possible infectious disease is identified
IVAD insertion and maintenance
Commencement of any antimicrobials
During IPAC audits
PPE is required when caring for a patient

Newly identified MRO/Infectious disease factsheet to be given to patients at time of verbal
notification – found on the IPAC intranet page under Consumer Information
Important Points to know for accreditation:
Where IPAC brochures are available.
When IPAC brochures are given to patients e.g. PIVC brochure given when PIVC inserted.
Staff educate patients, carers and visitors on hand hygiene.
Staff educate patients, visitors and carers on appropriate donning and doffing of Personal Pro- tective Equipment, as required.
Staff educate the patients regarding any antimicrobial treatment prescribed.
Staff discuss with patient the need for any Indwelling medical devices e.g. PIVC’s.
Staff review and discuss with patients the ongoing need for the indwelling devices and educate patients on signs and symptoms of infection.
