THE KING’S BUSINESS

458 to know Jesus. (2) “Things to come.” There are those who tell us that we know nothing about the future. It is true we cannot know, the future by our own spec ulation and guessing, but there is One who knows all about the future, and it is His business to “declare the things to come,” and He has done it and is doing it today. The words, “He shall not speak of Himself,” do not mean that the Holy Spirit should not have anything to say about Himself, it means, as rendered in the Revised Version, “He shall not speak from Himself,” i.e., He would get His teaching from another God. The Holy Spirit’s work was to center in Jesus, “H e s h a l l g lo r ify m e ," says the Lord. He reveals Jesus to us in such a way that we see His glory. Oh, how glorious we see ( 1 ) T he Spirit of Com fort, vs. 26, 27. Where is paraclete (“Comforter”) ren dered advocate? 1 John 2:1. Had His advent been predicted? Joel 2:28, 29. Are Christ and the Comforter identical pefsonalities ? John 14:16-18. Who else is a member in this unity ( “Name”)? Matt. 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14. Have we a Trinity of Comforters? 2 Cor. 1:2-6. Jesus to be when the Spirit teaches usl To the man who is not Spirit-taught Jesus is small, not much above other men. T o the Spirit-filled man Jesus stands absolutely alone, “In Him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily” (cf. Col. 2:9). If one is Spirit-taught and Spirit-filled, he will not long remain a Unitarian. If one is really Spirit-taught and Spirit-filled, he will be very much occupied with Jesus. On the day of Pentecost when Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit, all he had to say was about Jesus (Acts 2:14-36). The Holy Spirit glorifies Jesus by taking of the things that belong to Him and declaring them unto us. It is a stupendous statement that Jesus makes in verse 15, but it is not part of the lesson, but both teacher and scholar will do well to ponder it. How did Peter apply this at Pentecost? Acts 2 :22, 23. On what ground was Christ crucified? John 18:30. What did His resurrection prove (a) as to Him? Rom. 1:4; (b) as to them? Acts ' 7 :51, 52. How does He convict of judgment? Rom. 1 :32 ; Heb. 10:26, 27. Nape other examples of three-fold con viction ? Acts 16:29 ; '30:24 ; 24:25 ; 26:28. (3 ) T he Spirit of Counsel, vs. 12-14. Why did they need further instruction? v. 14. What proves that they were unprepared for it now? Mark 9:10; Luke 24:21. What needed qualities did the Comforter possess? Isa. 11:1-5. Does He know all Divine counsels? Rom. 8:27. Did He impart the needed “many things” ? 2 Peter 1 :3. Of Whom and what alone does He bear witness ? 14:26. What “things to come” are most apt now? 1 Tim. 4:1-3: 1 Thess. 4:15-17. Where do we find His counsels now? 2 Tim. 3:16.
